Key takeaways

  • The platinum chart offers 7 timeframes: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and all history, in US dollars per troy ounce, and opens on the 1-year view.
  • Platinum's annual average price stayed between $862 and $1,090 per troy ounce every year from 2016 to 2023, on the LBMA annual-average series compiled by metalcharts.org.
  • Platinum charts show different numbers because each plots a different price series: the January 2026 record reads $2,923 at WPIC, $2,860 on Johnson Matthey's base price and $2,923.70 on NYMEX futures.
  • Platinum has traded below gold continuously since 2015 (metalcharts.org), the year of the diesel emissions scandal that BullionVault identifies as the turning point.
  • Platinum's largest recorded fall on one series is 67.0% in seven months, from $2,308.80 in March 2008 to $761.80 in October 2008 on NYMEX futures (Nasdaq).

What Does the Platinum Price Chart Show Today?#

The platinum price chart shows $1,711.00 per troy ounce today, +1.18% over 24 hours and +4.76% over one year on the vendor's OTC spot series. Each point on the line is the daily close (on the 1-day view, a minute quote) for one troy ounce (31.1034768 grams) of pure platinum at wholesale spot, before dealer premiums, taxes or refining charges. The chart stays in US dollars per troy ounce; the price box above converts the same quote to $55.01 per gram and $55,009.93 per kilogram, and the vendor series high is $2,776.00.

Platinum is one of six platinum group metals, and platinum group metal prices come from a different source for each metal. All six live quotes sit in one table under platinum group metal prices today.

Platinum Chart Timeframes: 1 Day to All History#

The platinum chart offers 7 timeframes: 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and all history, in US dollars per troy ounce, and opens on the 1-year view. The 1-day view plots minute quotes from the last 24 hours; every longer view plots daily closes. The 7 timeframes and the use of each are listed below.

Timeframe Points plotted What the view is for Earliest date
1 day Minute quotes The move over the last 24 hours Rolling 24 hours
1 week Daily closes Reaction to a report, auction or data release Rolling 7 days
1 month Daily closes Short trend and support levels Rolling 1 month
6 months Daily closes The 2026 reset and recovery Rolling 6 months
1 year (default) Daily closes 52-week high $2,776.00 and low $1,515.00 Rolling 12 months
5 years Daily closes The 2023 to 2024 base and the 2025 breakout Rolling 5 years
All history Daily closes The whole series, with the 2025 breakout and the January 2026 peak September 2019, start of the vendor series

One troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams and one kilogram 32.1507466 troy ounces; the price box's gram and kilogram prices use those troy ounce factors, as does the troy ounce converter.

Which Platinum Price Series This Chart Plots#

This chart plots the daily close of a vendor's over-the-counter (OTC) spot quote for platinum, from Metals-API, not the LBMA Platinum Price, because since 1 July 2026 that benchmark can be republished only under an ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) license. The chart's last point is the same quote shown as the platinum spot price today, with bid and ask, on platinum spot price today.

Four price series describe platinum, listed below.

  • OTC spot: dealer bid and ask quotes aggregated by a data vendor; this chart's series.
  • LBMA Platinum Price: the London benchmark, auctioned from 09:45 and 14:00 London time (AM and PM), published in US dollars to 2 decimal places, with no fixed publication time.
  • NYMEX platinum futures: 50-troy-ounce contracts in US dollars per troy ounce, active in January, April, July and October.
  • Johnson Matthey base prices: quotes for platinum sponge to wholesale customers.

IBA took over the LBMA Platinum Price on 1 July 2026 from the London Metal Exchange (December 2014 to 30 June 2026), and LBMA states that "a licence from IBA is required in order to obtain, use or redistribute real-time or historical LBMA Platinum and Palladium Price data from that date." The London Platinum and Palladium Market (LPPM) stopped displaying historical platinum and palladium prices the same day. Auction rules for the LBMA Platinum Price are set out on LBMA platinum price.

Platinum Price Chart by Timeframe: 1, 5, 10 and 20 Years#

Platinum's annual average price stayed between $862 and $1,090 per troy ounce every year from 2016 to 2023, on the LBMA annual-average series compiled by metalcharts.org. The five windows below use that one series; the 1-year row reads live from the chart.

Window Years Highest Lowest Change, first to last year
1 year (live, vendor OTC spot) Rolling 12 months $2,776.00 $1,515.00 +4.76%
5 years 2021 to 2023 (verified years) $1,090 (2021) $963 (2022) -11.3%
10 years 2016 to 2023 $1,090 (2021) $862 (2019) -2.0%
20 years 2006 to 2023 $1,721 (2011) $862 (2019) -15.3%
Since 1971 1971 to 2023 $1,721 (2011) $112 (1971) 8.6 times (+763%)

Annual averages, USD per troy ounce, metalcharts.org. No verified full-year average for 2024 or 2025 exists yet, so rows end at 2023.

The 20-year window ends 15.3% below its 2006 start although the 2008 spike sits inside it: an annual average absorbs a peak that lasted weeks.

Platinum Price Chart: The Last 12 Months#

Over the last 12 months platinum peaked at $2,923 per troy ounce on 26 January 2026 (WPIC) and fell to $1,646 in June 2026 on the LBMA series. The two points sit on different series, so no percentage links them; the vendor's own 12-month high, low and change are $2,776.00, $1,515.00 and +4.76%. The dated turns of the last 12 months are listed below.

  • 26 January 2026: $2,923, the all-time high, after a "final 25% surge" in three weeks (WPIC).
  • 29 January to 2 February 2026: a sharp reset, then back above $2,000 by mid-February (WPIC).
  • End of March 2026: $1,908, on economic concern after the outbreak of war in Iran and on US dollar strength (Johnson Matthey, PGM Market Report, May 2026, p.17).
  • June 2026: $1,646, the 2026 low on the LBMA series (learn.bulliontradingllc.com).

Platinum Price Chart: 5 and 10 Years#

Over 10 years the platinum price stayed flat for eight years and then broke out: annual averages moved from $987 (2016) to $967 (2023), then platinum broke $1,300 in June 2025 and passed its 2008 record on 24 December 2025. The flat stretch is a band of $862 to $1,090, with a 2.0% decline from the first to the last of eight annual averages.

The 5-year window holds the plateau's end: $1,090 in 2021, then $963 in 2022 and $967 in 2023 (-11.3%). Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026) dates the breakout in four steps, listed below.

  • June 2025: above $1,300 per troy ounce.
  • July 2025: above $1,450, the highest since 2014.
  • October 2025: briefly above $1,700.
  • 31 December 2025: a close just over $2,000.

The record broke at about $2,320 to $2,323 on 24 December 2025 (metalcharts.org; Kitco).

Platinum Price Chart: 20 Years and Since 1971#

The last 20 years of the platinum price are framed by two peaks: $2,308.80 on NYMEX futures on 4 March 2008 and $2,923 on 26 January 2026 (WPIC). The dated turns between them, each on its named series, are listed below.

  • 4 March 2008: $2,308.80 on NYMEX futures (about $2,290 spot), after the Eskom power crisis halted South African mines.
  • October 2008: $761.80 on NYMEX futures (Nasdaq), as vehicle output collapsed.
  • 2011: $1,721, the highest annual average (metalcharts.org).
  • 2014: a five-month strike removed about 1.2 million ounces, roughly 40% of world output; the average still fell 6.9%.
  • 2015: Dieselgate (18 September 2015); the average fell 24.0%, and 38% from 2014 to 2019.
  • 24 December 2025: the first record in 17 years and 9 months.

Since 1971 the annual average rose 8.6-fold, from $112 to $967 in 2023, with one long round trip: the 1980 average of $677 was not exceeded until 2003 ($691). Trading Economics' series, which starts in 1968, has its low at $97.70.

The January 2026 high is a nominal record only: metalcharts.org puts the March 2008 peak at roughly $3,400 in today's dollars and the 1980 peak higher still. The full platinum price history is on platinum price history.

Why Platinum Price Charts Show Different Numbers#

Platinum charts show different numbers because each plots a different price series: the January 2026 record reads $2,923 at WPIC, $2,860 on Johnson Matthey's base price and $2,923.70 on NYMEX futures. None is wrong: they measure a reference level, a producer quote for sponge and an intraday futures trade.

Futures charts print the highest numbers because futures trade intraday and a chart of them keeps every spike. NYMEX platinum futures cover 50 troy ounces per contract, and contract terms and settlement data are on NYMEX platinum futures.

A second reason arrived on 1 July 2026: LBMA benchmark history now needs an IBA license, so free chart sites plot dealer or futures series instead. The readings of one record, and the record they replaced, are listed below.

The platinum price data sources behind this chart, with their licenses, are documented under platinum price data sources.

Chart pages also differ in what they call the record. Two of the three top-ranked platinum chart pages that DailyPlatinum reviewed on 25 September 2026 still dated the record to 2008, eight months after the January 2026 peak.

Johnson Matthey base prices differ from spot because they quote sponge, the catalyst-grade powder, and reset four times each business day. Johnson Matthey base prices are compared with Heraeus and Umicore quotes separately.

Platinum vs Gold Price Chart#

Platinum has traded below gold continuously since 2015 (metalcharts.org), the year of the diesel emissions scandal that BullionVault identifies as the turning point. In 2008 the order ran the other way: platinum passed $2,200 per troy ounce while gold traded near $1,000.

The live chart above plots platinum alone, with no gold overlay; the gap between the two metals' prices per troy ounce is the platinum vs gold discount in dollars. Price, rarity and investment are compared on platinum vs gold.

Even the January 2026 record did not close the gap. Gold set its own record of $5,608.35 per troy ounce the same month (Trading Economics), so the platinum-to-gold ratio stayed below 0.55 at platinum's peak. The discount also moved the market: WPIC attributes the first phase of the 2025 rally to Chinese jewelers rotating into platinum in Q2 2025 at its record discount to gold.

Why is platinum cheaper than gold? Gold carries investment demand from central-bank reserves, ETFs and a monetary role that platinum lacks, so the gap measures investment preference more than scarcity: why platinum is cheaper than gold.

Platinum to Gold Price Ratio: 20-Year Range#

The platinum-to-gold price ratio ranged from about 2.38 in May 2008 to about 0.29 in April 2025, the inverses of GuruFocus's 20-year gold-to-platinum extremes (0.42 and 3.45). The ratio is the platinum price divided by the gold price: above 1.0 platinum costs more, below 1.0 it costs less. The readings below give both forms.

Date Pt/Au Au/Pt Source
9 May 2008 About 2.38 0.42 (20-year low) GuruFocus
16 April 2025 About 0.29 3.45 (20-year high) GuruFocus

Today's ratio is given as a percentage, so 41.4%% divided by 100 is the Pt/Au value in the table. The platinum to gold ratio's history and what analysts read into it are on platinum to gold ratio.

How Volatile Is the Platinum Price Chart?#

Platinum's largest recorded fall on one series is 67.0% in seven months, from $2,308.80 in March 2008 to $761.80 in October 2008 on NYMEX futures (Nasdaq). Percentages below are given only where both ends share a series; moves across two series show endpoints only. The realized moves are listed below.

Move From To Elapsed Change
2008 Eskom run About $1,500 (early 2008) Over $2,250 About 6 weeks Approximate levels only
2008 crash $2,308.80, 4 Mar 2008, NYMEX $761.80, Oct 2008, NYMEX 7 months -67.0%
2025 to 2026 rally $908, 2025 low (Heraeus, partial year) $2,923, 26 Jan 2026 (WPIC) About 13 months Endpoints only, two series
2026 reset $2,923, 26 Jan 2026 (WPIC) $1,646, Jun 2026 (LBMA) About 5 months Endpoints only, two series
Palladium 2001, for comparison $1,050, start of 2001, LBMA $440, end of 2001, LBMA 12 months -58.1%

Annual averages hide most of that range: on the metalcharts series the yearly change runs from -34.1% (1981) to +71.2% (1979). No annualized volatility figure is quoted here, because the only published estimate rests on a single unverified source.

The platinum market is also far thinner than gold's: LBMA's daily trade reporting (LBMA-i) put platinum's 12-week average value of trades at $15.50 billion against $942.57 billion for gold, 60.8 times more, for the period ending 31 July 2026. Bid-ask spreads widen in the same order across the precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium.

What Moves the Platinum Price Chart, and What It Does Not Show#

The platinum chart moves on mine supply, investment flows, industrial demand, the US dollar and gold, and the signals that lead it, such as lease rates and above-ground stocks, never appear on the price line. South African mines delivered 1.002 million ounces in Q1 2026, 41% more than a year earlier (WPIC Platinum Quarterly Q1 2026). What drives the platinum price shifts by quarter; the nine factors are on what drives the platinum price.

Which signals sit off the chart? Six readings that no price line plots are listed below, each with its date and source.

Signal Reading Date Source
3-month implied lease rate Above 25%, against 1% to 3% in 2024 and 5% to 10% in January to May 2025 July 2025 WPIC
1-month lease rate 22.7% June 2025 Auronum
Price-model residual (PPAM) Above US$500/oz, then minus US$11/oz after the reset 26 January 2026; after the reset WPIC
CFTC non-commercial position Net long 11,635 contracts (581,750 oz); commercials net short 16,151 28 July 2026 CFTC, NYMEX
Platinum ETF holdings 3,021 koz, a two-year low; 3.0 Moz support level since 2019 June 2026 WPIC Platinum Perspectives
Above-ground stocks and balance 3.4 months of demand at end-2026; 265 koz surplus forecast for 2026 9 September 2026 WPIC Platinum Quarterly Q2 2026

Lease rates measure physical tightness: 3-month rates above 25% in July 2025 came five months before the December 2025 record. The price-model residual is the part of the price supply and demand do not explain; WPIC reads its fall to minus US$11 as prices realigned with traditional drivers.

The balance forecasts point in opposite directions. WPIC's Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026 forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026 after a 2025 deficit of over 1.4 million ounces; Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026, on its own basis, puts platinum in deficit for a fourth consecutive year. The size and duration of the platinum market deficit are tracked on platinum market deficit.

Platinum Price Chart in India (INR per Gram)#

The platinum price in India converts the US dollar price per troy ounce into rupees per gram, so the INR figure moves with both platinum and the USD/INR exchange rate; the chart above stays in US dollars per troy ounce.

The rupee figure excludes India's 15.4% basic customs duty on platinum, restored on 13 May 2026 by Customs Notifications 15/2026 to 18/2026, plus GST and dealer premiums; the platinum price in India today with duty is on platinum price in India today.

The rupee price follows from the US dollar price in three steps, listed below.

  1. Take the USD spot price per troy ounce, $1,711.00.
  2. Divide it by 31.1034768 to get US dollars per gram.
  3. Multiply by the USD/INR exchange rate, giving ₹5,297.72 per gram and ₹52,977.21 per 10 grams.

Indian jewelers quote per gram and per 10 grams, according to the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), which also publishes a twice-daily Platinum999 rate. China's Guangzhou Futures Exchange also prices platinum per gram, in 1,000-gram yuan lots since 27 November 2025 (WPIC). WPIC's Platinum Quarterly Q1 2026 puts growth in Indian bar and coin demand at 226% for 2026. The rate per 10 grams: platinum price per 10 grams today.

Using the Platinum Price Chart: Alerts, Buying and Selling#

Platinum buyers, sellers and analysts use the chart as the reference for price alerts, dealer premiums and scrap payouts. The chart is one view of the platinum group metals market; supply, demand and recycling data sit under platinum group metals market.

Platinum Price Chart Alerts and the Daily Report#

DailyPlatinum price alerts email you when platinum crosses a level you set on the chart, in ounces, grams or kilograms. Setup for platinum price alerts: platinum price alerts.

Buying or Selling Platinum at the Charted Price#

Platinum bars and coins cost the charted spot price plus a dealer premium, and platinum scrap is paid on its fine platinum content, not its gross weight. Spot refers to wholesale LPPM Good Delivery metal of at least 99.95% purity, and platinum premiums over spot by product are on platinum premiums over spot.

Investing in platinum has four routes (bars, coins, ETFs and futures), compared on investing in platinum; the steps are in how to buy platinum.

Pt950 jewelry is 95% platinum (WPIC glossary): a 10 g ring holds 9.5 g at the gram price in the widget above. Bullion sells back to dealers and scrap to refiners; see scrap platinum price and the platinum value calculator.

Other PGM Price Charts#

DailyPlatinum publishes a live chart for each of the six PGMs, and only platinum and palladium are charted on an over-the-counter spot quote. Rhodium, iridium and ruthenium are charted from a dealer quote supplied by our data vendor and osmium from an administered price. The series behind each of the five other charts are listed below.

Metal Series behind the chart Chart page
Palladium Over-the-counter spot quote from our data vendor, Metals-API palladium price chart
Rhodium Dealer quote supplied by our data vendor; rhodium "spot" is an indication, with no exchange or benchmark rhodium price chart
Iridium Dealer quote supplied by our data vendor; no exchange or futures iridium price chart
Ruthenium Dealer quote supplied by our data vendor; no exchange or futures ruthenium price chart
Osmium Osmium Institute price for crystalline osmium; no Johnson Matthey quote osmium price chart

Platinum and palladium swapped places in 2017: palladium reached parity with platinum on 27 September 2017, the first time since 2001, and platinum's premium was restored by the end of 2025. Both pairings are compared on platinum vs palladium and rhodium vs platinum.

Platinum price pages for other weights, time ranges and contracts each have a dedicated page, listed below.

Platinum Price Chart FAQ#

What is the highest platinum price in history?#

The highest platinum price in history is $2,923 per troy ounce, reached on 26 January 2026 (WPIC), a month after platinum first broke its 2008 record on 24 December 2025. The same peak reads $2,923.70 on NYMEX futures and $2,860 on Johnson Matthey's base price. The previous record, $2,308.80 on NYMEX futures on 4 March 2008, stood for 17 years and 9 months.

Is platinum going up in value?#

No price direction is certain; platinum fell from $2,923 in January 2026 (WPIC) to $1,646 in June 2026 (LBMA series), and WPIC's Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026 forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026. The chart's 1-year change of +4.76% shows the direction over the last 12 months on one series. Over the long run, the annual average rose from $112 in 1971 to $967 in 2023.

How much will platinum be worth in 10 years?#

DailyPlatinum does not predict platinum's price 10 years ahead; the forecasts on record from WPIC and Johnson Matthey are 2026 market balances, not 10-year prices, and they disagree on the sign: WPIC forecasts a surplus, Johnson Matthey a fourth year of deficit. Each named, dated platinum price forecast is collected on platinum price forecast.

Why is platinum hard to sell?#

Platinum is harder to sell than gold because its market is thinner: LBMA-i platinum turnover was $15.50 billion against gold's $942.57 billion (12-week average to 31 July 2026). A thinner market means wider bid-ask spreads, and a seller receives the dealer's bid, not the charted spot price. Sponge, wire and alloyed jewelry also pass through assay or refining before payment.

Is it better to buy gold or platinum?#

Gold and platinum differ as holdings in price behavior, liquidity and storage cost: BullionVault charged 0.48% a year to store platinum against 0.12% for gold on 6 August 2026. Platinum's chart fell 67.0% in seven months in 2008 and has traded below gold since 2015. The price and value comparison of platinum vs gold is on platinum vs gold.

Why does this chart differ from Kitco, APMEX or BullionVault charts?#

Dealer charts plot the dealer's own quotes: Kitco's chart page states its prices are provided by Kitco Metals Inc., and BullionVault plots a midpoint price over up to 20 years. This chart plots one series, the daily close of the OTC spot quote from Metals-API, and a note under it names the unit, the basis and the vendor. APMEX's chart page could not be retrieved (HTTP 403, 24 and 25 September 2026), so its series is not described.
