How This Ruthenium Price Chart Works#
This chart plots one line, the daily close of a dealer quote for ruthenium supplied by our data vendor, Metals-API, with 1-week through 5-year views and an All view that starts in February 2021, because no continuous public archive extends as far back for ruthenium as it does for platinum and palladium. The vendor does not name the quoting dealer, and the quote is not the Johnson Matthey base price. The ruthenium price today page carries this same series at a single point in time; this chart adds the history. Johnson Matthey resets the base price four times each business day and exports it as CSV, PNG and PDF files from its own site, the closest the market comes to a downloadable ruthenium price archive. The chart carries no second line: Umicore's Sales Price Fabricated, in euros per gram, and Heraeus's published price series, both fabrication or dealer prices rather than a benchmark, are not plotted.

- All shows the whole daily series, which starts in February 2021, since ruthenium has no decades-long public series the way platinum and palladium do.
Ruthenium Historical Price Data#
Ruthenium's all-time high is $1,750 per troy ounce (about $56.26 per gram), set on 13 March 2026 on the Johnson Matthey base price, reported by Reuters, Kitco and Mining Weekly on 16 March 2026. No verified all-time low exists separately from the metal's published annual averages; the earliest figure in the record, $65 per troy ounce in 2014 (SFA Oxford), stands as the lowest point on file. From the 2014 figure to the March 2026 record is roughly a 27 fold move, driven by hard disk drive magnetic layers, nylon precursor catalysis and electrochemical demand rather than the automotive sector.
What Moves the Ruthenium Price#
Four factors move the ruthenium price: hard disk drive demand, nylon precursor catalysis, AI linked electrochemical demand and a tightening 2026 supply deficit.
- Hard disk drive magnetic layers for data centre storage, the driver behind most of ruthenium's rise since 2014, since Johnson Matthey's demand tables carry no automotive line for this metal.
- Nylon precursor chemical catalysis, an established industrial use with no automotive substitute at scale.
- AI linked electrochemical and data centre demand, which MKS PAMP's Nicky Shiels describes as making ruthenium "a precious proxy for the AI buildout."
- A forecast 2026 deficit of 203,000 troy ounces, according to Metals Focus director Wilma Swarts, reported 16 March 2026.

Why Ruthenium Has No Exchange or Spot Price#
No exchange, benchmark administrator or regulated auction quotes ruthenium; every published figure is a producer or refiner quote. Ruthenium and iridium are the thinnest covered metals in the precious complex: two or three refiner quotes and a handful of subscription assessments, with no exchange, no benchmark and no public volume series. Kitco does not publish a continuous two way bid and ask for ruthenium the way it does for platinum, palladium and rhodium, so no dealer "spot" figure exists to quote for this metal at all.
The Johnson Matthey Base Price for Ruthenium#
Johnson Matthey publishes a ruthenium base price four times each business day, and it is the reference most reports cite in place of an exchange price. The base price quotes ruthenium sponge, the powder form used for catalysts and chemicals, in US dollars per troy ounce, with settings at 08:30 and 14:30 Hong Kong time, 09:00 London and 09:30 US Eastern, plus a same day average across regions. Two named refiners publish secondary quotes: Umicore's Sales Price Fabricated, in euros per gram (EUR 52.55/g on 5 August 2026 and EUR 53.95/g on 24 September 2026), and Heraeus's weekly published price series. Neither is a spot price; both carry a fabrication or dealer margin the Johnson Matthey base price does not.

Compared with gold on the same USD basis, ruthenium moves on its own supply and demand drivers, not a fixed ratio to gold. Ruthenium reached effective parity with platinum on a per gram basis for the first time in the modern market on 5 August 2026, when Umicore quoted the two metals within a tenth of a euro of each other.
