How This Rhodium Price Chart Works#
This chart plots one series, not two: the daily close of a dealer quote for rhodium supplied by our data vendor, Metals-API, which does not name the quoting dealer; the same quote sits on the rhodium price today page. It is not the Johnson Matthey Base Price. Johnson Matthey resets its Base Price four times each business day, at 08:30 and 14:30 Hong Kong time and 09:00 London and 09:30 US Eastern, so the "daily" rhodium price is really four regional settings. The timeframe toggles run from 1W to All, and All starts in September 2019, since the vendor's series has no public, multi-decade archive the way NYMEX platinum futures do.
- 1W, 1M: the dealer quote's daily closes; there is no 1D view, since the quote changes only a few times a day.
- 6M, 1Y: the default 1-year view, the range most dealer sites quote against.
- 5Y, All: All shows the whole series from September 2019; there is no 10Y view.
Why Rhodium Has No Exchange or Spot Price#
No exchange, benchmark administrator or regulated auction quotes rhodium; every published figure is a producer, refiner or dealer quote. NYMEX and COMEX list platinum and palladium futures but nothing on rhodium, and the LBMA benchmark family stops at those two metals. A dealer-quoted "rhodium spot" price, the kind Kitco publishes, is a composite indication, not a cleared exchange print. Kitco's own bid and ask read $8,200.00 and $9,450.00 per troy ounce on 5 August 2026, a 15.24% spread, roughly 30 times wider than gold's that day.
The Johnson Matthey Base Price for Rhodium#
Johnson Matthey publishes a rhodium Base Price four times each business day, and it is the reference most industry reports cite in place of an exchange price. In its own words, Base Prices are "quoted prices for our customers of wholesale quantities of platinum group metals," set by JM trading desks in the US, Hong Kong and the UK from their assessment of market conditions, not a survey or an auction. The price is quoted for sponge, the powder form industrial buyers purchase, and it is regionally fragmented by design: Hong Kong, London and New York each print a separate number the same day.
Rhodium Historical Price Data#
Rhodium's all-time high is around $29,800 per troy ounce, reached in March 2021 on dealer-quoted series, according to Trading Economics. Several aggregator sites repeat the figure with no independent primary source behind it, so DailyPlatinum treats the level as attributed rather than verified. The same dealer-quoted series puts rhodium's all-time low at $625 per troy ounce, over its tracked window from 2012 to 2026.
| Record | Value | Date | Series | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All-time high | ~$29,800/oz (attributed) | March 2021 | Dealer-quoted composite | Trading Economics |
| All-time low | $625/oz | 2012 to 2026 series window | Dealer-quoted composite | Trading Economics |
No other traded metal matches rhodium's swings: the metal has twice lost more than 80% of its value within three years, in 2008 to 2009 and again in 2021 to 2023, and once gained nearly 4,900% within five years, from about $600 per ounce in 2016 to its March 2021 peak.
What Moves the Rhodium Price#
Four factors move the rhodium price: automotive demand, South African supply concentration, non-substitutability in catalysts and the metal's thin, exchange-free market. Automotive catalysts took 84.6% of the 1,063,000 troy ounces of rhodium demanded in 2025, or 899,000 ounces, according to Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026. Rhodium is the only metal that reduces nitrogen oxide efficiently inside a three-way catalyst, so tightening emissions standards raise demand with no substitute to cap the price. South Africa supplies about 82% of primary rhodium, the tightest geographic concentration of any PGM, so a single mine disruption there can move the whole market. With no futures, no ETF arbitrage and an annual market of roughly one million ounces, a small imbalance moves rhodium far more than it moves platinum or gold.
Rhodium Price by Unit#
Rhodium converts between the gram, the troy ounce and the kilogram at 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce, the same factor used for every other PGM. The table below lists the live rhodium price in three common units.
| Weight | Grams | Troy ounces | Price (USD, live) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 1 | 0.0321507466 | $289.36 |
| 10 grams | 10 | 0.321507466 | $2,893.57 |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1034768 | 1 | $9,000.00 |
| 1 kilogram | 1,000 | 32.1507466 | $289,356.72 |
The gram price is the troy ounce price divided by 31.1034768, and the same figures stand alone on rhodium price per gram today and rhodium price per kilogram today.
A weight in any other unit, from pennyweight to tola, converts with the same fixed factor in the troy ounce converter.
Rhodium vs Gold and Other PGMs#
Compared with gold on the same USD basis, rhodium moves on its own automotive and supply drivers, not a fixed ratio to gold. At rhodium's March 2021 peak of roughly $29,800 per troy ounce, the metal briefly traded at around 15 times the contemporaneous gold price, a multiple that collapsed within three years as the rhodium market swung back the other way. Platinum and palladium each carry their own ratio to gold too, set independently rather than pegged, and rhodium's full price and property comparison sits on rhodium vs gold.
Rhodium Price History and Forecast#
The events behind rhodium's biggest moves, from the 2008 crash to the 2021 spike and the 2025 to 2026 rebound, are covered in full on rhodium's price history page, and named analyst outlooks sit on its forecast page. Rhodium price history sets out the year-by-year narrative behind each swing, and rhodium price forecast compares named, dated house views rather than averaging them into one number.
Other PGM Price Charts#
DailyPlatinum publishes a live chart for each of the six platinum group metals, since none tracks the others on a fixed ratio. The five sibling charts are listed below.
- Platinum price chart: charted on an over-the-counter spot quote, for a metal with an exchange-cleared benchmark and NYMEX futures.
- Palladium price chart: the other exchange-traded PGM, charted on the same over-the-counter spot basis.
- Iridium price chart: charted like rhodium, on a dealer quote supplied by our data vendor.
- Ruthenium price chart: also a dealer quote, with its own 2026 record.
- Osmium price chart: the one PGM Johnson Matthey does not quote at all.
Buying, Selling and Tracking Rhodium#
Rhodium buyers and sellers use this chart's price as the reference for ETF baskets, catalytic-converter scrap payouts and refiner quotes, since no rhodium IRA exists. Global rhodium ETF holdings reached about 22,000 troy ounces at the end of 2025, the highest in more than five years, per Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026. US tax law excludes rhodium from retirement accounts outright: 26 U.S.C. Section 408(m)(3)(B) names only gold, silver, platinum and palladium as IRA-eligible metals. Physical exposure runs through bars and powder, covered on rhodium investment: bars, powder and risks, or catalytic-converter scrap, covered on rhodium scrap.
Rhodium Price Chart FAQ#
How much is 1 oz of rhodium right now?#
One troy ounce of rhodium costs $9,000.00 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC, a dealer quote rather than an exchange price. The Johnson Matthey Base Price, the more commonly cited industry reference, is a separate quoted figure explained above.
What is the highest price of rhodium ever recorded?#
Rhodium's highest recorded price is around $29,800 per troy ounce, reached in March 2021 on dealer-quoted series (Trading Economics), a figure several aggregator sites repeat with no independent primary source, so it is treated as attributed rather than fully verified.
Is rhodium going to go back up?#
No price direction is certain; Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026 forecasts a small rhodium surplus of about 15,000 ounces for 2026. Rhodium's price record is the most volatile of any traded metal, so any single forecast carries a wide margin of error.
Is it worth investing in rhodium?#
DailyPlatinum gives no investment advice; rhodium's volatility record is the sharpest of any traded metal, having twice lost more than 80% of its value within three years and once gained nearly 4,900% within five, from about $600 in 2016 to its March 2021 peak.
Will a magnet stick to rhodium?#
No: rhodium is paramagnetic, not ferromagnetic, so a magnet does not visibly stick to it. Its molar magnetic susceptibility of +111.0 (×10⁻⁶ cm³/mol) is modest next to palladium's +567.4, the strongest of the six PGMs.
