What Is the Platinum Price Today?#

The platinum price today is $1,711.00 per troy ounce in US dollars (OTC spot, 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC), +1.18% over the last 24 hours. That figure is what 1 oz of platinum is worth today: one troy ounce of pure platinum at wholesale spot, before dealer premiums or refining charges. The widget adds the bid and ask, the day's range and a "delayed" badge after 15 minutes without a quote.

Platinum is one of six platinum group metals (PGMs), and platinum group metal prices come from a different source for each metal. All six live quotes sit in one table under platinum group metal prices today.

Platinum Price per Troy Ounce, Gram and Kilogram#

One troy ounce of platinum costs $1,711.00, one gram $55.01 and one kilogram $55,009.93 at the current spot price. One troy ounce equals exactly 31.1034768 grams, 9.7% heavier than the 28.3495-gram avoirdupois ounce, and one kilogram holds 32.1507466 troy ounces. The platinum price for nine common weights is listed below in US dollars and Indian rupees.

Where Today's Platinum Price Comes From#

The price on this page is an over-the-counter (OTC) spot quote for platinum from a market-data vendor, stamped with the time of its last update. It is not the LBMA Platinum Price, whose real-time and historical data need a license from ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) since 1 July 2026. The source label under the widget states four things, listed below.

  • Source: the vendor that supplied the quote, with the basis "OTC spot".
  • Time: the last update in local time and UTC, with a market open or closed marker.
  • Basis: the bid, the ask and the reference close used for the daily change.
  • Delay status: a "delayed" badge after 15 minutes without a new quote.

Each vendor aggregates its own dealer quotes, so two OTC spot feeds can differ at the same moment. Each of the platinum price data sources and its license is documented under platinum price data sources.

Platinum Spot Price: Bid, Ask and Spread#

The platinum spot price is the price for platinum delivered within two business days, quoted as a bid (the price dealers pay) and an ask (the price dealers charge) per troy ounce. In London, IBA's definitions count only days that are business days in both the UK and the US. The spread is the gap between the two quotes, currently a bid of $1,711.00 against an ask of $1,722.00.

What sets the spread? Liquidity: across the precious metals it widens in the order gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, and it widens again for very small or very large tickets, for sponge rather than bars, and outside London and Zurich.

Why Coin, Bar and Scrap Prices Differ From the Spot Price#

Platinum coins and bars cost more than the spot price because dealers sell them at a retail premium over spot, while scrap pays less than spot because the refiner deducts its charges. The spot price refers to wholesale metal: the London market trades unallocated platinum backed by LPPM Good Delivery plates and ingots of at least 99.95% purity, weighing 1 to 6 kg (32.151 to 192.904 oz t).

A 1 oz coin or a 100 g bar carries fabrication and dealer costs that a 6 kg plate does not. Platinum premiums over spot by product are tracked on platinum premiums over spot.

How Is the Platinum Price Set?#

The platinum price comes from four price series: the LBMA Platinum Price auction in London, NYMEX platinum futures in New York, Johnson Matthey base prices and dealers' over-the-counter spot quotes. The auction clears London metal twice a day, futures trade 50-ounce contracts, Johnson Matthey quotes sponge, and dealers quote continuously.

LBMA Platinum Price: The London Benchmark Auction#

The LBMA Platinum Price is the global benchmark price for unallocated platinum in London, set twice each business day by an electronic auction that ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) has run since 1 July 2026, after the London Metal Exchange (December 2014 to 30 June 2026). IBA's methodology (July 2026) sets six steps, listed below.

  1. Queue orders in Round Zero, the 30 minutes before the 09:45 or 14:00 London start.
  2. Publish a round price set by IBA's algorithm.
  3. Enter, amend or cancel orders in troy ounces for 60 seconds.
  4. Test the imbalance between buying and selling against 4,000 oz.
  5. Adjust the price and run a new round while the imbalance exceeds 4,000 oz.
  6. Publish the final price in US dollars to 2 decimal places, with indicative GBP and EUR values.

The final round can come at any time, so the LBMA Platinum Price is auctioned from 09:45, not set at 09:45. It moves in steps of at least USD 0.05, and an auction needs at least two active Direct Participants. Imbalance, holiday and error rules are on LBMA platinum price.

Using or redistributing the benchmark's data requires an IBA license, so this page displays a vendor's OTC spot quote.

NYMEX Platinum Futures: The New York Contract#

NYMEX platinum futures are exchange-traded contracts for 50 troy ounces of platinum, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce on CME Group's New York Mercantile Exchange. Active months follow a January, April, July and October cycle, and intraday trading makes futures print the headline records: the January 2026 peak reads $2,923.70 on NYMEX (Trading Economics).

Open interest stood at 53,658 contracts, or 2.683 million troy ounces, on 28 July 2026 (CFTC). Contract terms and settlement prices for NYMEX platinum futures are on NYMEX platinum futures.

China's Guangzhou Futures Exchange (GFEX) launched physically settled platinum futures on 27 November 2025, 1,000 grams per lot and priced in yuan per gram, according to the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC).

Johnson Matthey Base Prices: The Producer Quote#

Johnson Matthey base prices are the prices at which Johnson Matthey quotes platinum sponge to its wholesale customers, reset four times each business day in Hong Kong, London and New York. The settings fall at 08:30 and 14:30 Hong Kong time, 09:00 London and 09:30 US Eastern, in US dollars per troy ounce.

A base price is one firm's assessment for sponge, the powder used for catalysts, not an auction result and not a regulated benchmark. On this basis the January 2026 record reads $2,860 (Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026). How Johnson Matthey base prices compare with Heraeus and Umicore quotes is covered separately.

What Moves the Platinum Price?#

The platinum price moves on mine supply, industrial and investment demand, the US dollar and the gold price. Each driver has left a dated mark since 2025, listed below with its direction and evidence.

Driver Direction of effect Dated evidence
South African mine supply More ounces add supply and weigh on the price 1.002 Moz in Q1 2026, up 41% year on year (WPIC Platinum Quarterly Q1 2026)
South African rand A weaker rand lowers producers' dollar costs and delays supply cuts 2021 rand costs down 11.0%, dollar costs down 0.9% (Minxcon, April 2023)
Physical tightness Scarce metal lifts lease rates and the spot price 3-month implied lease rates above 25% in July 2025, against 1% to 3% in 2024 (WPIC)
Investment flows Outflows return metal to the market 83 koz net disinvestment forecast for 2026 (WPIC Platinum Quarterly Q2 2026)
Macro flows and gold Macro buying lifts the price above fundamentals Price-model residual above US$500/oz on 26 January 2026, later minus US$11/oz (WPIC)
US dollar A stronger dollar pressures the dollar price $1,908/oz at end-March 2026 on war and dollar strength (Johnson Matthey, May 2026)

Every platinum price forecast weighs these six drivers differently, which is why WPIC, Johnson Matthey and other houses publish different outlooks. The platinum price forecast page sets each named, dated outlook side by side.

Supply: South African Output and the Rand#

South African mines delivered 1.002 million ounces of platinum in Q1 2026, 41% more than a year earlier, according to WPIC's Platinum Quarterly Q1 2026. Russia supplied 136,000 oz (down 24%) and Zimbabwe 84,000 oz (down 26%), and the South African recovery, with investor selling, turned Q1 into a 268,000-oz surplus, the first quarterly surplus in six quarters.

Why does the rand matter? South African producers pay costs almost entirely in rand and sell metal in dollars, so the exchange rate sets their margins. Minxcon's April 2023 cost-curve study shows the scale: in 2021, all-in sustaining costs fell 11.0% in rand but only 0.9% in US dollars, because the rand strengthened. A weaker rand does the reverse, lowering dollar costs and delaying supply cuts.

Demand: Automotive, Industrial, Jewelry and Investment#

Platinum demand comes from four sectors: automotive catalysts, industrial uses, jewelry and investment, and WPIC's September 2026 forecast has industrial demand up 5% and jewelry demand down 15% in 2026. The four sectors and their 2026 forecasts (WPIC Platinum Quarterly Q2 2026, 9 September 2026) are listed below.

  • Automotive catalysts: platinum in diesel oxidation catalysts and other emission systems, forecast down 4%.
  • Industrial uses: glass production, chemical catalysts, petroleum refining and electronics, forecast up 5%.
  • Jewelry: Pt950 and other platinum alloys, forecast down 15%.
  • Investment: bars, coins and exchange-traded funds, forecast at 83,000 oz of net disinvestment.

Investment is 2026's swing sector, and vehicles did not drive the rally before it: Johnson Matthey's own series, on a different basis, shows automotive platinum demand falling from 3,389,000 oz in 2024 to 3,329,000 oz in 2025.

Gold, the US Dollar and Macro Flows#

Platinum tracks gold when macro flows dominate and diverges from it when vehicle demand dominates. The two decoupled in 2015 and moved together again in 2025 to 2026, when gold set its own record of $5,608.35 per troy ounce in January 2026 (Trading Economics), the month of platinum's record.

How much of that peak was macro? WPIC's Platinum Price Attribution Model put the residual that supply and demand do not explain above US$500 per ounce on 26 January 2026 and at minus US$11 after the reset, which WPIC reads as prices realigned with traditional drivers.

A stronger dollar raises platinum's cost in every other currency. Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026, p.17) attributes the March 2026 sell-off to economic concern after the outbreak of war in Iran and to US dollar strength.

Platinum Market Balance 2026: WPIC and Johnson Matthey#

WPIC forecasts a 265,000-ounce platinum surplus for 2026 in its Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026, after a 2025 deficit of over 1.4 million ounces. Its edition of 18 May 2026 had forecast a 297,000-ounce deficit, a 562,000-ounce swing on the same WPIC and Metals Focus basis. WPIC chief executive Trevor Raymond says the swing is "overwhelmingly due to investment outflows that occurred during the first half of the year." The headline figures of the September edition are listed below.

Measure WPIC figure Period
Market balance 265 koz surplus 2026 forecast
Market balance Deficit of over 1.4 Moz 2025, revised
Investment demand 83 koz net disinvestment 2026 forecast
Jewelry demand Down 15% year on year 2026 forecast
Industrial demand Up 5% year on year 2026 forecast
Automotive demand Down 4% year on year 2026 forecast
Above-ground stocks 3.4 months of global demand End of 2026 forecast

Johnson Matthey publishes a separate balance on its own basis: its PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026 puts platinum in deficit for a fourth consecutive year. The two houses define supply and demand differently, so their figures never share a calculation. WPIC's release calls inventories "critically depleted" after three consecutive years of significant deficit; the platinum market deficit itself is tracked on platinum market deficit.

What Is the Highest Platinum Price Ever?#

The highest platinum price ever is $2,923 per troy ounce, reached on 26 January 2026, according to the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC). Other series read the same peak differently; four readings and the 2008 record it replaced are listed below.

Record Price (USD per oz t) Date Series and source
All-time high 2,923.00 26 January 2026 WPIC
All-time high 2,923.70 January 2026 NYMEX futures (Trading Economics)
All-time high 2,920.41 26 January 2026 Spot (metalcharts.org)
All-time high 2,860.00 January 2026 Johnson Matthey base price (PGM Market Report, May 2026)
Previous record 2,308.80 4 March 2008 NYMEX futures (Nasdaq)

Four series, not one.

The 2008 record stood for more than 17 years; NYMEX platinum then fell 67% to $761.80 by October 2008 (Nasdaq). The platinum price history in annual averages, on metalcharts.org's LBMA-based series, reads $677 in 1980, $1,572 in 2008, $1,721 in 2011 (the series high through 2023) and $1,053 in 2015. Every year since 1971 is on platinum price history.

Platinum Price Levels 2025 to 2026#

Platinum broke its 2008 record in December 2025, peaked in January 2026 and fell to $1,646 per ounce in June 2026, the 2026 low on the LBMA series. Dated levels, each with its series, are listed below.

  • July 2025: above $1,450, the highest since 2014 (Johnson Matthey).
  • 24 December 2025: about $2,320 to $2,323, the first break of the 2008 record (metalcharts.org; Kitco).
  • 26 January 2026: $2,923, the all-time high, after a "final 25% surge" in three weeks (WPIC).
  • 29 January to 2 February 2026: a sharp reset, then above $2,000 by mid-February (WPIC).
  • End of March 2026: $1,908 (Johnson Matthey).
  • June 2026: $1,646, the 2026 low on the LBMA series (learn.bulliontradingllc.com).

The platinum price chart draws the platinum price path between these points, live and over longer ranges.

WPIC attributes the 2025 rally to three phases: Chinese jewelers rotating into platinum at its record discount to gold in Q2 2025, US trade policy pulling metal onto US exchanges in late Q3 2025, and broad precious-metals buying from December 2025.

Platinum Price vs Gold Price Today#

Platinum trades at 41.4%% of the gold price today, $1,711.00 against $4,135.60 per troy ounce. That percentage is the platinum-to-gold ratio (Pt/Au), the platinum price divided by the gold price: below 100%, platinum is the cheaper metal.

The platinum vs gold order ran the other way for most of the modern era: in 2008 platinum passed $2,200 per ounce while gold traded near $1,000. Price, rarity, value and investment differences between the two metals are compared on platinum vs gold.

The widget shows the gold price and the ratio beside the platinum price, so both sides of the comparison update together.

Platinum's Discount to Gold Since 2015#

Platinum has traded below gold continuously since 2015 (metalcharts.org), the year of the diesel emissions scandal that BullionVault identifies as the turning point. Platinum is the main metal in diesel oxidation catalysts, and its annual average fell from $1,385 in 2014 to $862 in 2019 (metalcharts.org) as European diesel sales declined.

The discount peaked on 16 April 2025, when gold cost 3.45 times as much as platinum (GuruFocus), and that record discount set off the 2025 recovery as Chinese jewelers rotated into platinum, according to WPIC. Why platinum is cheaper than gold comes down to demand as much as supply, since gold holds central-bank reserve and monetary roles that platinum lacks: see why platinum is cheaper than gold.

Buy, Sell and Track Platinum at Today's Price#

Platinum buyers and sellers use today's spot price as the reference for scrap payouts, bullion premiums and price alerts. The same spot price anchors the wider platinum group metals market, from mine supply to recycling.

Live PGM prices today for the other five metals follow the same logic, side by side under live PGM prices today.

Selling Platinum: Scrap, Jewelry and Bullion#

Platinum sellers are paid on the platinum content of an item, not its gross weight: Pt950 jewelry, for example, is 95% fine platinum. Purity is expressed in parts per 1,000 (WPIC glossary), so a 10 g Pt950 ring holds 9.5 g of platinum. The scrap platinum price starts from that fine content: scrap platinum price.

Refiners then deduct a refining charge; Ecotrade Group, a catalyst-scrap refiner, lists US$5 to US$25 per troy ounce. Selling platinum jewelry for scrap follows the same rule: selling platinum jewelry for scrap.

The best place to sell depends on form: bullion to dealers, jewelry and industrial scrap to refiners. The platinum value calculator turns weight and purity into a spot value.

Buying Platinum: Bars, Coins and ETFs#

Platinum buyers pay the spot price plus a dealer premium on bars and coins, while platinum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) hold vaulted bullion for their shareholders. Investing in platinum has four routes, bars, coins, ETFs and futures, compared on investing in platinum.

Physical buyers choose a size, a product and a dealer, steps set out in how to buy platinum. Platinum bars run from 1 g bars to kilo bars, and their sizes, brands and purity are covered on platinum bars.

Platinum Price FAQ#

How much is 1 oz of platinum worth today?#

One troy ounce of platinum (31.1034768 g) is worth $1,711.00 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC. That is the spot value of pure metal: a 1 oz platinum coin sells above it because of the dealer premium, and scrap pays below it after refining charges. The same ounce is worth €1,525.99 in euros and ₹164,777.55 in rupees.

Why is platinum hard to sell?#

Platinum is harder to sell than gold because its market is less liquid, so dealers quote wider bid-ask spreads. A seller receives the dealer's bid, not the mid-price, and the spread widens again for small lots and for sponge, wire or alloyed jewelry, which go through assay or refining before payment.

Is platinum going to drop in price?#

No price direction is certain; WPIC's Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026 forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026. WPIC also expects above-ground stocks of 3.4 months of demand at the end of 2026, and Johnson Matthey's May 2026 report, on its own basis, shows a fourth year of deficit. Named outlooks sit on platinum price forecasts.

Why is the platinum price different on each website?#

Platinum prices differ between websites because each site shows a different price series at a different time: the January 2026 record reads $2,923 at WPIC, $2,860 on Johnson Matthey's base price and $2,923.70 on NYMEX futures. Dealer sites add their own bid, ask and premium. Every series is explained under platinum price data sources.

Is platinum a better investment than gold or silver?#

Platinum differs from gold as a holding in liquidity and storage cost: BullionVault charged 0.48% a year to store platinum against 0.12% for gold on 6 August 2026, the same 0.48% it charged for silver.
