Key takeaways

  • Palladium is a high-volatility, industrially driven investment: its price rose 67.0% in 2025 alone, from $994 to $1,660 per troy ounce on the LBMA series, after falling for three straight years from its 2022 peak.
  • The palladium price moves on automotive demand, Russian and South African mine supply, and the market's annual deficit or surplus.
  • Investors can hold palladium four ways: bars, coins, exchange-traded funds and mining company shares or futures.
  • Retail palladium premiums over spot ranged from 13.4% on a 1 oz bar to 71.7% on the American Palladium Eagle, according to JM Bullion pricing of 5-6 August 2026, against a palladium ask of $1,394.50 per troy ounce.
  • Palladium is one of only four IRA-eligible metals: Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m)(3)(B) names gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and excludes rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium entirely, since the section references only the fineness a regulated futures market requires for delivery.

Palladium (Pd, element 46, CAS 7440-05-3) is the most volatile of the traded platinum group metals, having swung from a $3,440.76 per troy ounce record in March 2022 to under $900 in 2025 and back to $1,660 by year end. Is palladium a good investment today? Its returns depend on automotive demand, Russian and South African mine supply, and the four ways investors hold it, bars, coins, exchange-traded funds and mining stocks or futures. The element behind every one of those routes, palladium (Pd), element 46, carries that same volatility into each.

Is Palladium a Good Investment?#

Palladium is a high-volatility, industrially driven investment: its price rose 67.0% in 2025 alone, from $994 to $1,660 per troy ounce on the LBMA series, after falling for three straight years from its 2022 peak. Palladium and investing in platinum both run through the same four routes, bars, coins, funds and mining exposure, but palladium's narrower demand base makes it the more cyclical of the two metals.

That single-year swing sits inside a longer, structural pattern: palladium has no jewelry or reserve-asset base of the size gold and platinum carry, so its price tracks automotive demand and mine supply almost directly, with little cushion from other buyers. The live palladium price today page tracks that price on the same LBMA and NYMEX bases used throughout this page.

Why Palladium Is More Volatile Than Platinum or Gold#

Palladium is more volatile than platinum or gold because roughly 81% of its demand concentrates in one use, gasoline autocatalysts, so any shift toward battery-electric vehicles or platinum substitution moves the whole market. Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of May 2026 puts 2025 automotive demand at 8,227,000 oz against total demand of 10,140,000 oz, a share close to the roughly 85% autocatalyst concentration commonly cited for the metal. Platinum and gold both draw on jewelry, industrial and reserve-asset demand that palladium largely lacks, so a swing in one of their many sectors rarely moves the whole price the way a swing in gasoline-engine production moves palladium's. About 25% of the palladium loaded into a diesel catalytic converter can routinely be substituted for platinum, rising to as much as 50% in some applications, according to the US Geological Survey, so refiners shift between the two metals whenever the price gap justifies it.

Palladium's 2022 Record and 2025 Recovery#

Palladium hit its all-time high of $3,440.76 per troy ounce on 7 March 2022 on Russia sanctions fears, then fell for three consecutive years before both platinum and palladium gained around 90% between early April and mid-October 2025, according to CME Group. The metal's 2025 path ran from a $994 start-of-year price to a $918 February low, an $876.60 April low, and a $1,660 year-end close on the LBMA series, a 67.0% annual gain. Four dated points on that path are set out below.

Date Event Price (USD per troy oz) Source
7 March 2022 All-time high, Russia sanctions fears 3,440.76 Reuters; LBMA series
1 January 2025 2025 opening price 994.00 LBMA series
April 2025 2025 low 876.60 LBMA series
31 December 2025 2025 year-end close 1,660.00 LBMA series

Palladium ran through an earlier, mirror-image shock in 2001: the metal fell 58.1% within the calendar year, from $1,050 to $440, and its annual average then collapsed from $608 in 2001 to $339 in 2002 and $202 in 2003, a 71% peak-to-trough decline over three years, as automakers substituted toward platinum. The full year-by-year record, including both the 2001 collapse and the 2022-to-2025 cycle, sits on palladium price chart.

What Drives the Palladium Price?#

The palladium price moves on automotive demand, Russian and South African mine supply, and the market's annual deficit or surplus. Each driver left a dated mark on the 2025-to-2026 cycle, and the palladium market breaks the full supply and demand picture down by year.

  • Bars: cast metal at LPPM Good Delivery purity, the lowest premium per ounce of the four routes.
  • Coins: sovereign bullion coins carrying a face value and legal-tender status.
  • Exchange-traded funds: shares backed by vaulted, allocated palladium.
  • Mining stocks and futures: price or company exposure without holding metal.
Driver Direction Dated evidence (Johnson Matthey, May 2026)
Automotive demand Declining, still dominant 8,227,000 oz of 10,140,000 oz total demand in 2025, down from 8,451,000 oz in 2021
Russia and South Africa mine supply Falling into 2026 Combined primary supply of 5,196,000 oz in 2025, forecast at 4,685,000 oz in 2026
Autocatalyst recycling Rising Secondary automotive supply of 2,657,000 oz in 2025, forecast at 2,945,000 oz in 2026
Market balance Deficit narrowing to a small surplus Movement in stocks of −416,000 oz in 2025, forecast at +214,000 oz in 2026

Automotive Demand and the Platinum-Substitution Risk#

Automotive demand sets the palladium price because about 81% of primary demand goes into gasoline three-way catalysts, and roughly a quarter of that palladium loading can be substituted back to platinum when the price gap justifies it. Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of May 2026 puts 2025 automotive demand at 8,227,000 oz against total demand of 10,140,000 oz, close to the roughly 85% concentration commonly cited for palladium's autocatalyst use. About 25% of the palladium loaded into a diesel catalytic converter can routinely be substituted for platinum, rising to as much as 50% in some applications, according to the US Geological Survey, so a widening platinum discount pulls refiners back toward platinum loadings within a model year or two. Battery-electric vehicles carry no catalytic converter at all, so their growing share of new-vehicle production removes palladium demand outright rather than merely substituting it.

Palladium Supply: Russia, South Africa and Recycling#

Russia and South Africa supplied 2,950,000 oz and 2,246,000 oz of primary palladium in 2025 respectively, together with recycled autocatalyst scrap, according to Johnson Matthey's May 2026 report. That recycled scrap added 2,657,000 oz in 2025, and Johnson Matthey expects secondary supply to rise to 2,945,000 oz in 2026 as more end-of-life vehicles reach scrap yards. Russian output is the more exposed of the two sources: Nornickel's own 2026 guidance of 2.42 million to 2.47 million ounces of palladium is a 10% to 11% decline on 2025 and, in the company's words, the lowest total since at least 2005. Sanctions risk compounds that exposure, since the London Platinum and Palladium Market suspended two Russian state refineries from its Good Delivery list in April 2022.

Palladium Market Balance: 2025 Deficit, 2026 Forecast Surplus#

Johnson Matthey put the 2025 palladium deficit at 416,000 oz, while Metals Focus estimated 1,069,000 oz for the same year, a gap driven mainly by different treatment of investment demand and Russian supply. The two houses differ by 653,000 oz, or a factor of 2.6, on the very same year.

Basis 2025 balance 2026 forecast Source
Johnson Matthey −416,000 oz (deficit) +214,000 oz (surplus) PGM Market Report, May 2026
Metals Focus / WPIC −1,069,000 oz (deficit) −91,000 oz (deficit) WPIC Platinum Essentials, 11 June 2026

Both houses expect the deficit to close: Johnson Matthey forecasts a 214,000-ounce surplus for 2026, and Metals Focus and WPIC project a return to surplus from 2027, at 325,000, 546,000, 532,000 and 518,000 ounces across 2027 to 2030.

Ways to Invest in Palladium#

Investors can hold palladium four ways: bars, coins, exchange-traded funds and mining company shares or futures. Each route carries a different premium, storage need and IRA status, summarized below before the four ways are covered in turn.

Route Typical premium or fee (JM Bullion / issuer data, Aug 2026) What you own
Bars 12.6% to 13.4% over spot Specific bars of metal
Coins 32.1% to 71.7% over spot Sovereign bullion coins
ETFs 0.49% to 0.78% annual fee Fund shares backed by vaulted metal
Mining stocks and futures Brokerage commission or margin Company shares or a futures contract

Palladium Bars#

Palladium bars carry a lower premium over spot than coins, and must meet the LPPM Good Delivery standard of 99.95% minimum purity in 1 to 6 kilogram bars to trade as investment-grade metal. On JM Bullion's dealer list of 5-6 August 2026, a 1 oz palladium bar carried a 13.4% premium over the $1,394.50 ask and a 10 oz bar 12.6%, both inside the London Platinum and Palladium Market's weight band for wholesale bars and ingots. That 1-to-6-kilogram range is the same one platinum bars use, so a palladium bar and a platinum bar of identical weight and refiner meet an identical purity floor even though they trade on different spot prices.

Palladium Coins: American Palladium Eagle and Canadian Maple Leaf#

The two dedicated palladium bullion coins are the US Mint's American Palladium Eagle (struck from 2017, .9995 fine, $25 face value) and the Royal Canadian Mint's Palladium Maple Leaf (first issued in 2005, .9995 fine, C$50 face value). Maple Leaf production ran 2005 to 2007 and 2009, then resumed in 2015, an interrupted history the American Palladium Eagle has not shared since its 2017 launch. The two coins are compared below.

Coin Mint First year Fineness Face value
American Palladium Eagle US Mint 2017 .9995 $25
Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf Royal Canadian Mint 2005 .9995 C$50

Coin premiums diverge sharply from bar premiums: JM Bullion's 5-6 August 2026 list put the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf at a 32.1% premium over spot and the American Palladium Eagle at 71.7%, the widest premium anywhere in DailyPlatinum's palladium product data. Low annual mintage, collector and numismatic crossover, and fabrication costs under extreme palladium lease rates explain that outlier premium rather than an ordinary bullion markup. Full specifications and mintage figures sit on the American Palladium Eagle and Palladium Maple Leaf pages.

Palladium ETFs#

Palladium ETFs hold allocated bullion or track the futures price, so a share gives price exposure with no bar or coin to store or insure. WisdomTree Physical Palladium (PHPD), a Jersey-domiciled exchange-traded commodity backed by LPPM Good Delivery metal at custodian HSBC Bank, charges the lowest of the three fees at 0.49% a year, against 0.60% for abrdn's Physical Palladium Shares ETF (PALL) and a 0.78% management expense ratio for Sprott's Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust (SPPP), which holds platinum and palladium together. PALL, PHPD and SPPP are compared fund by fund on DailyPlatinum's palladium ETFs page.

Palladium Mining Stocks and Futures#

Mining-stock exposure comes through diversified PGM producers such as Nornickel and Sibanye-Stillwater, since no fund tracks palladium miners exclusively; futures trade on NYMEX in 100 troy ounce lots. Nornickel alone guides to 2.42 million to 2.47 million ounces of palladium production in 2026, a 10% to 11% decline the company attributes to lower ore grades, so a single share buys exposure to that one producer's output alongside its nickel and platinum lines. The 100 troy ounce NYMEX lot is twice the size of the 50-ounce platinum contract, with delivery months and margin rules set by CME Group, and the platinum stocks page covers the platinum-focused equivalents of these same PGM producers.

Palladium Premiums Over Spot#

Retail palladium premiums over spot ranged from 13.4% on a 1 oz bar to 71.7% on the American Palladium Eagle, according to JM Bullion pricing of 5-6 August 2026, against a palladium ask of $1,394.50 per troy ounce. The four dated products below span that range.

Product Premium over spot Date, source
1 oz bar 13.4% JM Bullion, 5-6 Aug 2026
10 oz bar 12.6% JM Bullion, 5-6 Aug 2026
1 oz Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf 32.1% JM Bullion, 5-6 Aug 2026
1 oz American Palladium Eagle 71.7% JM Bullion, 5-6 Aug 2026

The American Palladium Eagle's premium is the outlier of the complex, driven by low annual mintage, collector and numismatic crossover, and fabrication economics under extreme palladium lease rates, not by an ordinary bullion markup. A 10 oz bar actually undercuts the 1 oz bar on a percentage basis, since fabrication cost is fixed per piece and spreads over more metal at the larger size.

Holding palladium raises two more questions once the buying decision is made: whether it belongs in a retirement account, and where to find the metal's live price and market data. Both sit outside the four investment routes above but follow directly from them.

Palladium in a Retirement Account (IRA)#

Physical palladium bars and coins meeting .9995 fineness can sit inside a US precious-metals IRA. Palladium is one of only four IRA-eligible metals: Internal Revenue Code Section 408(m)(3)(B) names gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and excludes rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium entirely, since the section references only the fineness a regulated futures market requires for delivery.

  • Eligible: gold, silver, platinum and palladium bullion at the fineness a regulated futures market requires for delivery.
  • Not eligible: rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium, since Section 408(m)(3)(B) names only the first four metals.

The 0.9995 threshold follows the NYMEX palladium delivery standard, one notch stricter than the 0.995 fineness gold needs for the same exemption. Eligible palladium must stay in a trustee's or depository's physical possession; taking personal possession of any of it counts as a distribution of the entire account. The mechanics of custodians, dealers and depositories, and palladium's place alongside platinum under the same statute, are set out on platinum IRA.

Palladium Investment FAQ#

Should I buy platinum or palladium?#

Platinum suits an investor who wants broader industrial and jewelry demand and lower volatility; palladium suits one seeking concentrated, cyclical automotive exposure, since on 5 August 2026 platinum traded at a 29.2% premium to palladium ($1,749.00 versus $1,354.00). The full platinum vs palladium comparison sets both metals side by side on price, properties and use.

Why is palladium losing value?#

Palladium lost value from its 2022 peak as automakers substituted platinum back into gasoline catalysts and diesel's decline slowed platinum-side demand less than expected, before the metal rebounded 67% in 2025. The same substitution mechanic works in both directions: it dragged palladium down through 2023 and 2024, then eased as the platinum discount narrowed and lease rates pushed manufacturers back toward ownership.

Is palladium expected to go up in 2026?#

No price level is certain; Johnson Matthey's May 2026 report forecasts palladium moving into a 214,000-ounce surplus in 2026, which would typically pressure price versus a deficit year. Metals Focus and WPIC instead put 2026 at a smaller, 91,000-ounce deficit before their own forecast surplus begins in 2027, so the two houses agree on direction more than on timing. The full palladium price forecast tracks both named, dated outlooks as they update.

Is palladium still a good investment?#

Palladium remains a viable but volatile holding: it rose 67% in 2025 even as the market ran an estimated deficit of 416,000 to 1,069,000 ounces depending on the data source. That range is itself the lesson for a prospective buyer, since Johnson Matthey and Metals Focus each report a real 2025 deficit while disagreeing by a factor of 2.6 on its size, so any single forecast should be read next to its house name and edition date rather than taken as consensus.
