How Is the Platinum Price per Gram Calculated?#

The platinum price per gram is the price per troy ounce divided by 31.1034768, the exact number of grams in one troy ounce (LBMA glossary). Worked example (dated, not today's price): JM Bullion's spot price of $1,763.60 per troy ounce at 23:49 EDT on 5 August 2026 equals $56.70 per gram and $56,701.06 per kilogram.

Price per gram = price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1034768
Price per kilogram = price per gram × 1,000 (= price per troy ounce × 32.1507466)
Price per ounce = price per gram × 31.1034768

Dated example (JM Bullion spot, 5 Aug 2026, 23:49 EDT):
  1,763.60 ÷ 31.1034768 = 56.7011 USD/g → 56.70 USD/g, 56,701.06 USD/kg
  1,763.60 ÷ 31.1 = 56.7074 USD/g → overstated by 0.0112%

Dividing by a rounded 31.1, as GoldCore's per-gram page does (checked 25 September 2026), overstates the gram price by 0.0112%: $0.0063 per gram, or $6.34 per kilogram, on the 5 August 2026 example. DailyPlatinum rounds once, at the end, from the exact constant. One gram equals 0.0321507466 troy ounces, the inverse of the same constant.

A troy ounce converter applies the same factor to any weight; the troy ounce converter handles troy ounces, grams and avoirdupois ounces.

Why the Platinum Price per Gram Differs Between Websites#

Platinum price per gram figures differ between websites because each site converts a different price series at a different moment: on 5 and 6 August 2026, JM Bullion's spot worked out to $56.70 per gram, Trading Economics' to $56.69 and BullionVault's to $56.54. The three quotes below share one market and one day.

Site Series USD per troy ounce USD per gram Date and time
JM Bullion Dealer spot 1,763.60 56.70 5 Aug 2026, 23:49 EDT
Trading Economics Composite spot quote 1,763.30 56.69 6 Aug 2026
BullionVault Platform price 1,758.62 56.54 6 Aug 2026

Three series, one market: per-gram values derived at 31.1034768 g per troy ounce.

The spot price of platinum is an indicative over-the-counter quote, and the bid (the dealer's buying price) sits below the ask (its selling price). Spot, futures and physical prices are compared under spot price of platinum.

DailyPlatinum never blends these series; every price here names its source and timestamp.

Platinum price data sources behind this widget, from vendor to exchange-rate feed, are listed on platinum price data sources.

Where Is Platinum Priced per Gram?#

Platinum is priced per gram on five major markets: the Shanghai Gold Exchange and Guangzhou Futures Exchange in yuan, Tanaka in yen, IBJA in rupees and Umicore in euros, while the London benchmark and New York futures quote per troy ounce.

China and the platinum market run on grams: the Shanghai Gold Exchange lists one platinum contract, Pt99.95, a physical spot contract with a 1 kg unit, according to the SGE, and the Guangzhou Futures Exchange opened physically settled platinum futures on 27 November 2025, according to WPIC. Chinese demand is covered on China and the platinum market.

Japan's reference is Tanaka Kikinzoku Kogyo, which publishes daily retail and buy-back platinum prices in yen per gram. The two Western references use troy ounces: the LBMA Platinum Price and NYMEX platinum futures, whose PL contract covers 50 troy ounces. Contract specifications are on NYMEX platinum futures.

Platinum Price per Gram in India (INR)#

India's reference platinum price is the IBJA Platinum999 rate, published in rupees twice daily (AM and PM) by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association, and Indian dealers quote it per gram and per 10 grams, according to IBJA. India accounts for 33,100 of the 49,500 monthly searches for "platinum price per gram", or 66.9% (DataForSEO, September 2026).

India's gram price sits above dollar spot times the exchange rate because of a 15.4% customs duty on platinum since 13 May 2026 (10% basic duty plus 5.4% AIDC, Customs Notifications 15/2026 to 18/2026), up from 6.4% since 24 July 2024. Jewelry adds 3% GST on metal and 5% on making charges (GST rates in force since 22 September 2025), according to Tally Solutions. The full breakdown of the platinum price in India today is on platinum price in India today.

Indian buyers compare jewelers' boards in 10-gram units, and the platinum price per 10 grams has its own page: platinum price per 10 grams.

Platinum Price per Gram by Purity: 999, 950, 900 and 850#

A gram of platinum jewelry or scrap is worth its fine platinum content: 0.95 g in Pt950, 0.90 g in Pt900 and 0.85 g in Pt850, because platinum purity is stated in parts per thousand (WPIC glossary). A gram of 999 platinum holds 0.999 g.

Platinum purity has four legal standards in the UK: 850, 900, 950 and 999, set in Schedule 2, Part 1 of the Hallmarking Act 1973, with a 0.5 g exemption weight. The Act recognized 950 only until 1999, when the other three were added. In the US, 16 CFR 23.6 allows an unqualified "Platinum" mark from 950, requires a number prefix such as "900Pt." from 850, and bars unqualified "Platinum" below 500. Fineness, alloys and testing are covered on platinum purity.

Fineness Fine platinum per gram UK legal standard US FTC marking (16 CFR 23.6) Value per gram, 5 Aug 2026 example ($56.70) Value per gram today
999 0.999 g Yes (since 1999) "Platinum", "Pt." or "Plat.", no number needed $56.64 0.999 × $55.01
950 0.950 g Yes (since 1973) "Platinum", "Pt." or "Plat.", no number needed $53.87 0.95 × $55.01
900 0.900 g Yes (since 1999) Number prefix required, e.g. "900Pt." $51.03 0.90 × $55.01
850 0.850 g Yes (since 1999) Number prefix required, e.g. "850Plat." $48.20 0.85 × $55.01

Metal value only, calculated from JM Bullion's 5 August 2026 spot of $56.70 per gram (not a current price); making charges and dealer margins are not metal value.

950 platinum (Pt950) is the most common jewelry grade, per the WPIC glossary, with other metals such as cobalt or copper making up the remaining 5%; its alloys are compared on 950 platinum.

The 2008 record of $74.23 per gram held for over 17 years until platinum passed it at about $2,320 to $2,323 per troy ounce ($74.59 to $74.69 per gram) on 24 December 2025. Every year, high and low in the platinum price history is on platinum price history.

Platinum trades below its January 2026 peak as the market has swung to surplus: WPIC forecasts a 265,000-ounce (265 koz) surplus for 2026 (Platinum Quarterly, 9 September 2026), after a 2025 deficit of over 1.4 million ounces, and attributes the swing mainly to investment outflows in the first half of 2026. Platinum vs Gold and Other PGMs per Gram#

Per gram, platinum costs about 41% of the gold price: Umicore quoted platinum at €52.65 and gold at €128.45 per gram on 5 August 2026. Trading Economics' dollar quotes gave 41.4% on 6 August 2026, and platinum has traded below gold continuously since 2015 (metalcharts).

Platinum vs gold is one comparison; the table puts the five PGMs Umicore quotes and gold on one basis and date, in euros per gram. The wider comparison of rarity, value and investment is on platinum vs gold.

Metal Umicore quote, €/g (5 Aug 2026) Ratio to platinum
Platinum 52.65 1.00
Palladium 42.60 0.81
Rhodium 254.95 4.84
Iridium 241.95 4.60
Ruthenium 52.55 1.00
Gold 128.45 2.44

Umicore does not quote osmium. Osmium-preis.com lists crystalline osmium at €2,289.84 per gram and Fine-Osmium at €54.30 per gram (24 September 2026); these are vendor product prices, not a market quote. Euro values are not converted to US dollars because the Umicore price type and exchange-rate timestamp are not stated on its public page.

Ruthenium at €52.55 per gram stood at parity with platinum at €52.65, the first such per-gram parity in the modern market according to DailyPlatinum's price-history research. Rhodium cost 4.8 times and iridium 4.6 times platinum per gram. How minor PGM prices are quoted by refiners such as Johnson Matthey, Heraeus and Umicore is explained under minor PGM prices are quoted.

Buying and Selling Platinum by the Gram#

Platinum buyers and sellers deal by the gram at a premium or discount to the spot price per gram, set by product form and fineness. Buyers pay above spot; sellers of jewelry and scrap receive less than the gram value of their fine metal.

Buying Platinum in Gram Bars and Coins#

Small platinum bars from 1 to 100 grams sell at a retail premium over the spot price per gram, according to DailyPlatinum's price-formation research, as do 1 oz coins and kilo bars; wholesale LPPM Good Delivery plates weigh 1 to 6 kg at 99.95% minimum fineness. Platinum bars are compared on platinum bars, and how to buy platinum on how to buy platinum.

No verified gram-bar premium percentage exists in DailyPlatinum's sources; data on platinum premiums over spot is collected under platinum premiums over spot. BullionVault charged 0.48% a year to store platinum against 0.12% for gold (6 August 2026). Investing in platinum by route is compared on investing in platinum.

Selling Platinum by the Gram: Scrap and Jewelry#

Platinum sellers are paid on fine platinum grams, not gross weight, less refining charges: a 10 g Pt950 piece holds 9.5 g of platinum. How assay sets the scrap platinum price is on scrap platinum price.

Ecotrade Group quotes toll-refining charges of $5 to $25 per troy ounce for catalyst scrap, or $0.16 to $0.80 per gram. A platinum value calculator applies weight and fineness to the live price: see the platinum value calculator.

Selling platinum jewelry for scrap is covered on selling platinum jewelry for scrap.

Platinum Price per Gram in Other Units and Other Metals#

Platinum Price per Gram FAQ#

How much is 1 gram of platinum worth?#

One gram of fine platinum is worth $55.01 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC, one 31.1034768th of the $1,711.00 troy-ounce price. A gram of Pt950 jewelry holds 0.95 g of platinum, so its metal value is 95% of that figure.

Is platinum more expensive than gold per gram?#

No: platinum has cost less than gold per gram continuously since 2015 (metalcharts), and was 41% of gold's gram price on Umicore's 5 August 2026 quotes. Today's ratio is 41.4%%, and platinum vs gold compares the two metals in full.

Why is platinum hard to sell?#

Platinum is harder to sell than gold because its market is less liquid, so dealers quote wider bid-ask spreads, which hit small gram-size lots hardest. Spreads widen from gold to silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium, and very small tickets pay more, according to DailyPlatinum's price-formation research.

What was the price of platinum per gram 10 years ago?#

Ten years ago, platinum averaged $31.73 per gram in 2016 ($987 per troy ounce, LBMA annual average via metalcharts.org). That was 6.3% below the 2015 average of $33.85 per gram on the same series.

What is the highest platinum price per gram ever?#

The highest platinum price ever is $93.98 per gram ($2,923 per troy ounce) on 26 January 2026, per WPIC; Johnson Matthey's base price peaked at $2,860 ($91.95 per gram). The previous record, $74.23 per gram, dates from 4 March 2008.

How big is 1 gram of platinum?#

One gram of platinum occupies 0.0466 cm³, because platinum (Pt, element 78, CAS 7440-06-4) has a density of 21.452 g/cm³ (PubChem rounds it to 21.46). The element is profiled on platinum (Pt), element 78, and its weight per volume on platinum density.

Is platinum the most expensive metal per gram?#

No: rhodium and iridium cost more per gram than platinum; Umicore quoted them at €254.95 and €241.95 per gram against €52.65 for platinum on 5 August 2026. Gold, at €128.45 per gram, also cost more.
