How This Palladium Price Chart Works#

This chart plots one line, the daily close of the over-the-counter (OTC) spot quote for palladium from our data vendor, Metals-API, with toggles for 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and the full series, which starts in September 2019; the 1-day view plots minute quotes from the last 24 hours. The default 1-year view shows that OTC spot quote, not the LBMA Palladium Price, a regulated auction result, and not NYMEX futures, which are exchange-cleared contracts. The chart stays in US dollars per troy ounce with no unit or currency toggle, since the price box above carries the unit and currency switch; it shows the change over the selected range, the price and date of any point on hover or tap, and a note underneath naming the unit, the basis and the vendor. Palladium price today carries the same live quote in a wider currency and weight table, for a reader who wants today's number rather than the historical path plotted here.

Palladium Historical Price Data#

Palladium's all-time high is $3,440.76 per troy ounce, set on 7 March 2022, on the Trading Economics and metalcharts.org series, as fears over Russian supply peaked days after the invasion of Ukraine. The metal's all-time low on Trading Economics' long-run series is $78.00 per troy ounce, on a series that begins in 1984. Between those two points, palladium's annual average has moved from $38 per troy ounce in 1970 to $2,398 in 2021, the peak year of its 2016-to-2022 bull run, before falling back to $984 by 2024 on the metalcharts.org series, which blends USGS/Engelhard producer prices through 1988 with the LBMA series from 1989 onward. The table below lists the record high and low alongside a run of decade-spaced annual averages, each carrying its own series.

What Moves the Palladium Price#

Four factors move the palladium price: automotive demand, Russian mine supply, platinum-for-palladium substitution and investment flows. Each has left a dated mark on the palladium market since 2021, listed below with its direction and evidence.

  • Automotive demand. Gasoline three-way catalysts absorb the largest share of palladium by far: Johnson Matthey's 2026 forecast puts automotive demand at 7,829,000 of 9,245,000 ounces of total demand.
  • Russian mine supply. Norilsk Nickel's own guidance, cited by Johnson Matthey, puts 2026 palladium output at 2.42 to 2.47 million ounces, a 10 to 11% decline on 2025 and "the lowest total since at least 2005."
  • Platinum-for-palladium substitution. Metals Focus estimates substitution away from palladium added an incremental 720,000 ounces of platinum demand in 2024 alone, locked in for each vehicle platform's roughly seven-year life.
  • Investment flows. Palladium exchange-traded fund holdings closed 2025 at 1.14 million ounces, the highest since early 2015, before roughly 100,000 ounces of Q1 2026 liquidation.

The Exchange and Benchmark Behind This Chart#

This chart plots an OTC spot quote, not an exchange or benchmark price; palladium's two exchange-based references are the NYMEX palladium futures contract, for 100 troy ounces, and the LBMA Palladium Price auction, which runs immediately after each day's platinum auction rather than at its own fixed clock time. ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) has administered both benchmarks since 1 July 2026, taking over from the London Metal Exchange, which ran the auction from December 2014. The palladium auction's order-queuing window opens at the same clock time as platinum's, then the auction itself starts only once the platinum round concludes, so it runs later on any given day. NYMEX palladium futures trade on a March, June, September and December cycle, a different rotation from platinum's January-April-July-October months. Contract specifications sit on NYMEX palladium futures, and the auction's full mechanics are on LBMA platinum and palladium prices.

Palladium Price by Unit#

Palladium converts between the gram, the troy ounce and the kilogram at 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce, the same factor used for every metal on this site. One troy ounce costs $1,165.00, one gram $37.46 and one kilogram $37,455.62; the NYMEX palladium contract covers 100 of those troy ounces at once. Other weights convert in the troy ounce converter; the gram price alone has its own page at palladium price per gram today, and buyers pricing a full kilogram lot can go straight to palladium price per kilogram today.

Weight Grams Troy ounces Price (USD)
1 gram 1 0.0322 $37.46
10 grams 10 0.3215 $374.56
1 troy ounce 31.1034768 1 $1,165.00
1 kilogram 1,000 32.1507466 $37,455.62

Palladium vs Gold and Other PGMs#

Compared with gold on the same USD basis, palladium moves on its own supply and demand drivers, not a fixed ratio to gold or to platinum. Palladium traded at a 29.2% discount to platinum, a Pt/Pd ratio of 1.29, on the Kitco series for 5 August 2026, a reversal from 2017 to 2023, when palladium held a premium instead. The platinum vs palladium comparison covers that inversion in full. Against gold, palladium sits well below its own cycle: gold set its own all-time high of $5,608.35 per troy ounce in January 2026, the same month platinum peaked, while palladium's record dates to a different cycle, March 2022. Price and investment differences between the two metals are compared on palladium vs gold, and every sibling PGM chart is one click away below.

Palladium Price History and Forecast#

The events behind palladium's biggest moves are the 2001 Russian supply squeeze, the 2016-to-2022 bull run and the 2022 sanctions spike. Each is covered with its cause and magnitude on palladium price history. Where the price goes next is a separate question from where it has been: named, dated outlooks from Johnson Matthey, WPIC and Metals Focus sit side by side on palladium price forecast, rather than on this page.

Palladium Price Chart FAQ#

Is palladium expected to go up?#

No price direction is certain; Johnson Matthey forecasts palladium moving into a small 214,000-ounce surplus in 2026, while Metals Focus's estimate, published via WPIC's June 2026 Platinum Essentials, still shows a 91,000-ounce deficit. Named, dated outlooks sit on palladium price forecast.

Why did palladium prices crash?#

Palladium fell from its $3,440.76 all-time high of 7 March 2022 as the sanctions fear behind the spike faded: the metal's annual average dropped from $2,112 in 2022 to $984 by 2024, a 53% two-year decline, as automakers accelerated platinum-for-palladium substitution.

What is the highest palladium has ever been?#

Palladium's highest price ever is $3,440.76 per troy ounce, reached on 7 March 2022, as fears over Russian supply peaked days after the invasion of Ukraine, according to Trading Economics and metalcharts.org.

Is palladium a better investment than platinum?#

Palladium is the more volatile and less liquid of the two: its annualized volatility runs 40 to 60%, against platinum's 25 to 35%, on one trading-guide estimate, and its 12-week average LBMA trading value of $6.96 billion ran at less than half of platinum's $15.50 billion for the period to 31 July 2026. The full comparison is on platinum vs palladium.

Who is the biggest buyer of palladium?#

Automotive gasoline catalysts are palladium's biggest buyer by a wide margin, accounting for 7,829,000 of the 9,245,000 ounces of total 2026 demand Johnson Matthey forecasts, more than every other use combined.
