Key takeaways

  • Platinum cost more than gold for most of the modern era, and on 9 May 2008 it traded at about 2.38 times the gold price (a gold-to-platinum ratio of 0.42, GuruFocus).
  • Platinum and gold both set nominal records in January 2026: platinum $2,923 per troy ounce on 26 January 2026 (WPIC) and gold $5,608.35 (Trading Economics).
  • Gold is the more valuable metal per troy ounce because investors and central banks hold it as money, while platinum is priced mainly as an industrial metal.
  • Platinum's primary supply was 5,557,000 troy ounces (172.8 tonnes) in 2025, according to Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026), and scarcity alone does not lift its price above gold's.
  • Platinum is denser, harder and higher-melting than gold: 21.452 g/cm³ against 19.283 g/cm³, Mohs 3.5 against 2.5, and 1,768.3 °C against 1,064.18 °C.

Platinum (Pt, atomic number 78, CAS 7440-06-4) costs $1,711.00 per troy ounce against $4,135.60 for gold (Au, atomic number 79, CAS 7440-57-5) as of 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC, so platinum trades at 41.4%% of the gold price. Gold has been the dearer metal since 2015, yet platinum is the denser, harder metal and melts 704 °C higher. The 12 differences below run from price to storage cost, each with its source and date.

Both prices in the module come from one data vendor's OTC spot quotes, so the ratio is a single series and never mixes two sources. The module carries no LBMA label: the LBMA platinum price is administered by ICE Benchmark Administration since 1 July 2026 and is shown only under license. Platinum price data sources, from the spot vendor to the benchmarks, are documented on platinum price data sources.

Platinum and gold differ on 12 measures: identity, price per ounce, price per gram, price ratio, record high, main demand, density, melting point, hardness, magnetism, jewelry fineness and storage cost. The table sets them side by side with the source for each row.

Is Platinum More Expensive Than Gold?#

No, platinum is not more expensive than gold: platinum has traded below gold continuously since 2015 (metalcharts) and costs 41.4%% of the gold price at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC. Below 100%, gold is the dearer metal; above it, platinum would be. The discount has lasted through platinum's own record: at $2,923 per troy ounce on 26 January 2026 (WPIC), platinum still cost less than 55% of gold, because gold set its record of $5,608.35 the same month (Trading Economics).

Platinum group metals compared on the same measures, from palladium to rhodium, each set against gold, are gathered on platinum group metals compared. The answer on this page reads the live ratio, so it changes the day platinum's price passes gold's.

When Platinum Cost More Than Gold#

Platinum cost more than gold for most of the modern era, and on 9 May 2008 it traded at about 2.38 times the gold price (a gold-to-platinum ratio of 0.42, GuruFocus). That reading is the 20-year extreme of the platinum premium in the GuruFocus series.

The premium was not permanent. The belief that platinum was "always more valuable than gold" is false as a historical generality: Spanish colonial miners discarded platinum as an adulterant of gold, and the Royal Society of Chemistry records the belief that it was "unripe gold" that would mature if returned to the river. Henrik Teofilus Scheffer, who published the first scientific description in Sweden in 1751 to 1752, called the metal "white gold". The metal once treated as waste later traded at more than twice the price of gold, a premium that ended in 2015.

What Put Gold Above Platinum in 2015#

Gold moved above platinum in 2015, when the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal cut demand for the diesel catalysts that use the most platinum, the turning point BullionVault names: "since the 2015 diesel scandal, platinum's price has trailed that of gold." The US Environmental Protection Agency issued its notice of violation on 18 September 2015.

Diesel was platinum's largest growth engine: platinum dominates diesel oxidation catalysts, while palladium dominates gasoline three-way catalysts. Why platinum is cheaper than gold, including the investment side of the gap, is explained in full on why platinum is cheaper than gold. The price record shows the scale. Platinum's annual average, on the LBMA-based metalcharts series, fell in 3 steps:

  • 2014: $1,385 per troy ounce.
  • 2015: $1,053, down 24.0% in the scandal year.
  • 2019: $862, the low point of the bear market that followed.

The demand loss was structural, not a single-year shock. Diesel's share of European new-car sales peaked at about 48% in 2015 (Just Auto; some sources cite 52%) and fell to between 8% and 11.6% by the mid-2020s, and platinum did not durably clear $1,100 per troy ounce again until 2025.

Platinum vs Gold Price per Ounce and per Gram#

Platinum costs $55.01 per gram and gold $132.96 per gram at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC, which is $1,711.00 against $4,135.60 per troy ounce. Every unit in the module derives from the ounce price with exact factors: 1 troy ounce is 31.1034768 g and 1 kg is 32.1507466 troy ounces. The table lists 4 units for both metals.

Unit Grams Troy ounces Platinum (live) Gold (live)
1 gram 1 0.0321507466 $55.01 $132.96
10 grams 10 0.321507466 $550.10 $1,329.63
1 troy ounce 31.1034768 1 $1,711.00 $4,135.60
1 kilogram 1,000 32.1507466 $55,009.93 $132,962.63

Live platinum group metal prices for all 6 metals, from palladium to osmium, are listed together; see live platinum group metal prices.

Rounding 31.1034768 g to 31.1 g, a common shortcut, misstates a 1-million-ounce holding by 3.48 kg, so the module keeps all 9 digits. The platinum price today, with bid, ask and 24-hour change, is tracked on platinum price today.

Indian buyers compare the two metals per 10 grams, the standard Indian bullion unit: platinum costs ₹52,977.21 and gold ₹128,049.42 per 10 g at converted spot, before import duty and GST. The platinum price in India today, with the 15.4% import duty in force since 13 May 2026, is on platinum price in India today.

Platinum Price as a Share of the Gold Price#

Platinum's price as a share of gold's is the platinum price divided by the gold price, 41.4%% today; above 100% (a ratio above 1.0), platinum is the more expensive metal. A hypothetical example shows the arithmetic: if platinum were 1,000 USD/oz and gold 2,500 USD/oz, the platinum-to-gold ratio would be 0.40, and the inverse gold-to-platinum ratio 2.5. GuruFocus and much South African commentary quote the inverse, so every reading below is converted to platinum over gold, with the series named.

Date Gold/platinum (as quoted) Platinum/gold Series

The platinum to gold ratio in this table measures investment preference, not scarcity, and nothing in the record says it must return to 1.0. Its full history and what traders read into it are on platinum to gold ratio.

The April 2025 low had a direct effect: WPIC attributes the first phase of platinum's 2025 rally to Chinese jewelers rotating into platinum at its record discount to gold.

The ratio moves with the platinum price itself, and that price over time is plotted on the platinum price chart; see platinum price chart.

Platinum and Gold Price Records, 2008 to 2026#

Platinum and gold both set nominal records in January 2026: platinum $2,923 per troy ounce on 26 January 2026 (WPIC) and gold $5,608.35 (Trading Economics). Each record comes from a named series, because the same event prints differently on each, as the table shows.

Date Metal Price (USD per troy ounce) Series or source
4 Mar 2008 Platinum 2,308.80, prior record held 17 years NYMEX futures (Nasdaq)
October 2008 Platinum 761.80, down 67.0% in 7 months Nasdaq
26 Jan 2026 Platinum 2,923, all-time nominal high WPIC
January 2026 Platinum 2,860, same event Johnson Matthey base price
January 2026 Gold 5,608.35, all-time nominal high Trading Economics

Platinum's 2026 record is nominal only. In inflation-adjusted terms it remains below the March 2008 peak, worth roughly $3,400 in today's money, and below the 1980 peak (metalcharts). The 2008 record also shows platinum's volatility: the price fell 67.0% from $2,308.80 to $761.80 within 7 months (Nasdaq), the largest platinum drawdown on record. The January 2026 peak was a whole-complex melt-up, with silver past $80 per ounce as well (CME Group), and prices reset between 29 January and 2 February 2026 (WPIC).

Platinum price history, with annual averages, highs and lows back to 1971, is on platinum price history.

Which Is More Valuable, Gold or Platinum?#

Gold is the more valuable metal per troy ounce because investors and central banks hold it as money, while platinum is priced mainly as an industrial metal. Value depends on the measure, however, and 4 measures give different answers, as listed below.

  • Price per ounce: gold leads; platinum costs 41.4%% as much today.
  • Monetary role: gold leads; central-bank reserves, ETFs and a monetary role give it investment demand platinum does not have.
  • Carrying cost: gold leads; storing platinum costs 0.48% a year against 0.12% for gold at BullionVault (6 August 2026).
  • Precious-metal content of jewelry: platinum leads; Pt950 is 95.0% platinum, 18K gold is 75.0% gold and 14K gold 58.5%.

Value per ounce is therefore a verdict on demand, not on the metal. Gold's lead rests on who holds it; platinum's position rests on what it is used for.

Is Platinum Rarer Than Gold?#

Platinum's primary supply was 5,557,000 troy ounces (172.8 tonnes) in 2025, according to Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026), and scarcity alone does not lift its price above gold's. DailyPlatinum does not yet hold a gold mine-supply figure sourced on a comparable basis, so this page states no supply multiple between the two metals. The price ratio cannot stand in for one: it measures investment preference, not scarcity.

How rare platinum is in the earth's crust and in annual output is covered separately; see how rare platinum is.

Platinum Supply by Region in 2025#

South Africa supplied 3,957,000 of 5,557,000 ounces of primary platinum in 2025, or 71%, on Johnson Matthey's figures. The table lists 5 regions with tonnes converted at 31.1034768 g per troy ounce.

Region Primary platinum 2025 (koz) Tonnes Share
South Africa 3,957 123.1 71.2%
Russia 650 20.2 11.7%
Zimbabwe 513 16.0 9.2%
North America 224 7.0 4.0%
Others 213 6.6 3.8%
Total 5,557 172.8 100%

Source: Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026. Tonnes and shares are DailyPlatinum calculations; shares sum to 99.9% after rounding.

Output is also falling outside South Africa: Russian primary platinum dropped from 700 koz in 2024 to 650 koz in 2025, and Johnson Matthey expects 630 koz in 2026, within a world total of 5,455 koz.

Platinum supply by country, including recycling, is tracked on platinum supply.

Platinum Demand vs Gold Demand: Industry and Money#

Platinum demand is mostly industrial: automotive catalysts took 41.5% and other industrial uses 32.8% of 8,019,000 ounces in 2025 on Johnson Matthey's basis. Gold demand is led by the opposite side: central-bank reserves, ETFs and a monetary role.

Platinum demand on the same Johnson Matthey basis split into 4 segments in 2025, listed below.

  • Automotive: 3,329 koz, 41.5%.
  • Industrial: 2,627 koz, 32.8%, covering chemical, glass, petroleum, electrical, medical and other uses.
  • Jewelry: 1,507 koz, 18.8%.
  • Investment: 556 koz, 6.9%, excluding changes in exchange stocks.

Platinum demand by segment, with both Johnson Matthey's and WPIC's series, is on platinum demand. The two bases are never mixed: WPIC and Metals Focus put the same year's demand at 8,431 koz on a different definition. The split explains the price gap better than supply does: 74.3% of platinum demand comes from vehicle catalysts and industry, while gold's buyers hold metal as a reserve.

Platinum vs Gold Properties: Density, Melting Point and Hardness#

Platinum is denser, harder and higher-melting than gold: 21.452 g/cm³ against 19.283 g/cm³, Mohs 3.5 against 2.5, and 1,768.3 °C against 1,064.18 °C. Both metals share the same face-centered cubic crystal structure, yet they respond to a magnet in opposite ways.

The properties of platinum (Pt), element 78, from isotopes to electrical resistivity, are on platinum (Pt), element 78.

Platinum is 11.2% denser than gold, so the same weight takes less room: 1 troy ounce of platinum fills 1.45 cm³ and 1 troy ounce of gold 1.61 cm³ (a DailyPlatinum calculation from the densities). Gold's melting point, 1,064.18 °C, is a defining fixed point of the International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90); platinum's is a secondary reference point. The table compares 6 properties.

Property Platinum Gold
Density at 20 °C 21.452 g/cm³ 19.283 g/cm³
Melting point 1,768.3 °C (2,041.4 K; 3,214.9 °F) 1,064.18 °C (1,337.33 K; 1,947.5 °F)
Boiling point 3,825 °C 2,970 °C
Hardness, Mohs 3.5 2.5
Hardness, annealed 41 HV 20 HV
Magnetic behavior Paramagnetic Diamagnetic

Sources: CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics via element data; annealed Vickers values from the Johnson Matthey legacy table.

Annealed platinum is twice as hard as annealed gold on the Vickers scale, yet pure platinum is still too soft for prong settings, which is why jewelry platinum is always alloyed. Platinum density and platinum melting point, with their measurement conditions and the older handbook values still in circulation, are covered on platinum density and platinum melting point.

Platinum vs Gold Purity: Pt950 vs 18K and 14K#

Platinum jewelry is usually Pt950, 95% pure platinum, while gold jewelry is usually 18K (75.0% gold) or 14K (58.5% gold). Platinum purity is written in parts per thousand, not karats; the WPIC glossary calls Pt950 "the most common variant". The UK Hallmarking Act 1973 (Schedule 2) sets the legal standards for both metals, listed below.

  • Platinum: 850, 900, 950 and 999 parts per thousand, minimum 850.
  • Gold: 375 (9K), 585 (14K), 750 (18K), 916.6 (22K), 990 and 999.

The 950 platinum standard, with its alloying metals and markings, is explained on 950 platinum. Alloy choice changes one property from the table above: Pt950 alloyed with cobalt is slightly magnetic, although pure platinum is not. Platinum is also naturally white, while white gold owes its color to alloying and, usually, rhodium plating.

Platinum vs white gold, the jewelry comparison, covers the metals' weight, wear and plating in detail; see platinum vs white gold.

Platinum vs Gold as an Investment#

Platinum and gold differ as holdings in liquidity, storage cost and tax treatment, not only in price. The table compares 5 carrying costs and rules, each with its instrument or source and date.

Measure Platinum Gold Source
Bid-ask spread rank Wider (third of 5 metals) Narrowest (first of 5) Kitco quote structure, Aug 2026
Storage cost 0.48% a year 0.12% a year BullionVault, 6 Aug 2026
EU VAT on investment bullion Standard-rated Exempt Council Directive 2006/112/EC, Arts. 344-356
UK VAT on investment bullion Standard-rated, 20% Exempt HMRC VAT Notice 701/21
US IRA minimum fineness 0.9995 0.995 IRC §408(m)(3)(B), NYMEX and COMEX delivery standards

Investing in platinum through bars, coins, ETFs, stocks and futures is compared on investing in platinum. This page compares the metals, and DailyPlatinum gives no advice on which to hold.

Liquidity and Bid-Ask Spreads#

Platinum is less liquid than gold, so dealers quote it with wider bid-ask spreads: spreads widen from gold to silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium. The spread is the price of immediacy, and it grows as the number of active buyers shrinks.

Why does the spread matter? A holder buys at the ask and sells at the bid, so a wider spread raises the price move needed to break even. Platinum's liquidity also tightens in stress. In July 2025, three-month implied platinum lease rates breached 25% (WPIC), and WPIC's Platinum Quarterly Q1 2026 reports that elevated lease rates "for some manufacturers made it prohibitively expensive to manufacture small bars and coins". Fabricators withdrew products rather than raise prices smoothly.

Storage Cost, VAT and IRA Fineness#

Storing platinum costs four times as much as storing gold at BullionVault: 0.48% a year against 0.12% on 6 August 2026. On a hypothetical holding worth 10,000 USD, that is 48 USD a year for platinum against 12 USD for gold. The 4 rules below widen the gap outside the vault.

  • EU VAT: the investment gold exemption in Council Directive 2006/112/EC (Articles 344 to 356, EUR-Lex) covers gold only, so platinum bullion is standard-rated in every member state, for example at 19% in Germany.
  • UK VAT: HMRC VAT Notice 701/21 exempts investment gold only; platinum bullion is standard-rated at 20%.
  • US IRA fineness: IRC §408(m)(3)(B) admits bullion at the fineness a futures contract market requires for delivery, which is 0.9995 for platinum (NYMEX) and 0.995 for gold (COMEX).
  • Singapore: the Investment Precious Metals GST exemption, in force since 1 October 2012, covers platinum at 99% purity or more and gold at 99.5% or more, according to Singapore Customs and IRAS.

A European buyer therefore pays VAT on platinum that a gold buyer does not, and recovers none of it on sale.

What Moves Platinum and Gold Prices#

Platinum tracks gold when macro flows dominate and diverges from it when vehicle demand dominates. The two decoupled in 2015 and re-correlated in the 2025 to 2026 melt-up, when gold and platinum set records within roughly a month of each other (CME Group).

What ended the correlation each time? Fundamentals returned. WPIC's Platinum Price Attribution Model showed a residual above US$500 per ounce on 26 January 2026, meaning macro factors, not fundamentals, set the price at the peak; after the late-January reset the residual fell to minus US$11, "suggesting prices are now aligned with traditional drivers" (WPIC). The ratio itself can move demand: Chinese jewelers bought platinum in the second quarter of 2025 because of its record discount to gold (WPIC). A third driver applies to platinum alone: South Africa produces over 70% of the world's platinum, and its producers pay costs in rand but sell in dollars, so the rand-dollar rate shapes supply decisions that have no counterpart in gold's price.

Is Platinum Better Than Gold?#

Neither metal is better on every measure: gold leads on liquidity, storage cost and tax treatment, platinum on density, hardness, melting point and jewelry fineness. The table sets out 8 uses and the metal that leads on each.

Use or measure Leads Why
Cost per ounce Platinum Costs 41.4%% of the gold price today
Liquidity Gold Narrowest bid-ask spread of the precious metals
Carrying cost Gold 0.12% a year storage against 0.48% (BullionVault, 6 Aug 2026)
Tax on purchase (EU, UK) Gold Investment gold exempt; platinum standard-rated
Weight per volume Platinum 21.452 against 19.283 g/cm³, 11.2% denser
Heat resistance Platinum Melts at 1,768.3 °C, 704 °C above gold
Jewelry fineness Platinum Pt950 is 95.0% metal; 18K is 75.0%, 14K 58.5%
Industrial demand exposure Platinum 74.3% of 2025 demand automotive and industrial (Johnson Matthey)

Which metal fits depends on the use. A holder who values quick resale and low carrying cost is weighing the rows gold leads; a buyer judging metal content or physical performance is weighing the rows platinum leads. The 2 metals also carry different risks: platinum's price follows vehicle and industrial output, while gold's follows investor and central-bank demand. DailyPlatinum records the measures and leaves the choice to the reader.

Platinum Compared With Other Metals, Prices and Products#

Platinum is compared with gold, silver, palladium and white gold on sibling pages that use the same measures. Platinum group metals compared side by side, with the ratio of each to gold, are gathered on platinum group metals compared.

Platinum vs White Gold, Silver and Palladium#

Platinum's other comparisons cover white gold, silver and palladium, the three metals it is most often weighed against, plus two gold pairings. The 5 pages are listed below.

Tracking the Platinum and Gold Price#

Platinum and gold prices update in the module above and in the platinum price chart, and a price alert emails you when platinum crosses a level you set. The platinum price today, with bid, ask and change, is on platinum price today.

The platinum price chart plots live and historical prices; see platinum price chart.

Platinum price alerts trigger on a price level and, once supported, on a share of gold; set them on platinum price alerts.

Buying and Selling Platinum#

Platinum buyers pay the spot price plus a dealer premium, and sellers are paid on platinum content, not gross weight. The premium falls as unit size rises, because fabrication cost per piece is broadly fixed. The steps of how to buy platinum are on how to buy platinum, and sizes and brands of platinum bars on platinum bars.

Platinum premiums over spot, by product and size, are tracked on platinum premiums over spot.

The scrap platinum price is set by assay and refining charges; see scrap platinum price.

Platinum vs Gold FAQ#

Is platinum actually cheaper than gold?#

Yes, platinum is cheaper than gold per ounce and has been since 2015; today it costs 41.4%% of the gold price. The discount reached its extreme on 16 April 2025, at a platinum-to-gold ratio of about 0.29 (GuruFocus).

Why is platinum hard to sell?#

Platinum is harder to sell than gold because fewer buyers trade it, so dealers quote wider spreads between their buying and selling prices. Spreads widen from gold to silver, platinum, palladium and rhodium, so a platinum seller gives up more of the price than a gold seller.

What will platinum be worth in 10 years?#

No forecast reaches 10 years; WPIC's Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026 forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026, after a 2025 deficit of over 1.4 million ounces. Johnson Matthey (May 2026), on its own basis, expects a fourth consecutive platinum deficit in 2026, so the two houses disagree on direction. Platinum price forecast outlooks, each with its publisher and date, are compared on platinum price forecast.

Is it worth buying platinum instead of gold?#

Whether platinum is worth buying instead of gold depends on the holder's use: platinum costs less per ounce but is less liquid and costs more to store, 0.48% a year against 0.12% at BullionVault. DailyPlatinum gives no investment advice.

What is the cost of 1 g of platinum?#

One gram of platinum costs $55.01 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC, against $132.96 for one gram of gold. The platinum price per gram in other currencies is on platinum price per gram.

Does platinum or gold jewelry keep more metal value?#

Platinum jewelry contains more precious metal per gram, 95% in Pt950 against 58.5% to 75.0% in 14K and 18K gold, but finished jewelry of any metal is bought back near scrap value. A hypothetical 10 g Pt950 ring holds 9.5 g of platinum; the same weight in 18K holds 7.5 g of gold. The scrap platinum price is paid on that content; see scrap platinum price.
