What Is the Iridium Price Today?#

The iridium price today is $8,150.00 per troy ounce in US dollars (dealer quote, 5 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC), a refiner's quote for iridium sponge rather than an exchange spot price. The widget labels that basis, prints the setting and the time of the last update, and shows no bid or ask, because no public two-way iridium quote exists.

Iridium is one of six platinum group metals (PGMs), and each of the platinum group metal prices comes from a different kind of source. All six quotes sit side by side under platinum group metal prices today.

A flat stretch in this series usually means the quote did not move, not that trades printed at one level. The iridium price chart draws the same series over longer ranges.

Where Does the Iridium Price Come From?#

The iridium price comes from refiner quotes, not from an exchange: Johnson Matthey, Umicore and Heraeus each publish their own iridium price. No auction, futures contract or clearing house sets a number for iridium, so every published iridium price is one firm's quote.

The three refiners differ in currency, unit and schedule, and this page names which one it displays. Each of the iridium price data sources, with its license terms, is documented under iridium price data sources.

Johnson Matthey Base Price for Iridium Sponge#

Johnson Matthey base prices are the prices at which Johnson Matthey quotes iridium sponge to its wholesale customers, in US dollars per troy ounce, set four times each business day in Hong Kong, London and New York. Johnson Matthey defines them as "quoted prices for our customers of wholesale quantities of platinum group metals", reflecting its own assessment of market conditions. The four settings, and the fifth series built from them, are listed below.

  • Hong Kong opening: 08:30 Hong Kong time.
  • Hong Kong closing: 14:30 Hong Kong time.
  • London: 09:00 London time.
  • New York: 09:30 US Eastern time.
  • Average: the mean across all regions.

Johnson Matthey also moves prices between settings when markets move sharply. Johnson Matthey base prices cover five metals, platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium, and not osmium; the comparison with Heraeus and Umicore quotes is under Johnson Matthey base prices.

A base price is a single firm's assessment, not an auction result and not a regulated benchmark. Sponge is the powder form that catalyst and chemical makers buy, so the most-cited iridium price is a sponge price.

Umicore and Heraeus Iridium Quotes#

Umicore publishes its iridium price in euros per kilogram, under six price types such as the purchase price and the fabricated sales price. Umicore's six price types are listed below.

  • Umicore Opening Price: the refiner's start-of-day reference.
  • Umicore Purchase Price: what Umicore pays for metal.
  • Umicore Sales Price Unfabricated: raw metal sold by Umicore.
  • Umicore Sales Price Fabricated: metal plus fabrication into a usable form.
  • Umicore Fixing Price and Post Fixing Price: referenced to a benchmark where one exists.

The gap between the purchase price and the unfabricated sales price is Umicore's own bid-offer. On 24 September 2026, Umicore's Sales Price Fabricated for iridium stood at EUR 252,400 per kilogram, and Umicore states that its prices "are of pure statistical nature and must be looked at as indications only."

DailyPlatinum never converts that euro figure into dollars per ounce, because the price type and the exchange-rate time are not published together. Heraeus publishes current and historical iridium price charts as a third refiner series.

Why Iridium Has No Spot Price, Futures or Bid-Ask Quote#

Iridium has no spot price in the exchange sense: no futures contract, no LBMA benchmark and no public bid-ask quote exists for it anywhere. No exchange-traded fund or options contract tracks iridium either.

A spot price needs dealers quoting continuous bids and asks, while iridium trades bilaterally and infrequently between a few refiner-traders and producers. Whole days can pass without a wholesale iridium trade, yet a quote is still published, so the series is smoother than the trading beneath it.

Spreads widen with illiquidity in the order gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, then iridium and ruthenium, then osmium. The eight price sources below cover platinum and iridium differently (each source's own pages, checked 6 August 2026).

Price source Platinum Iridium

Johnson Matthey base price (sponge, 4 settings a day) Yes Yes
Umicore daily refiner quote Yes Yes
Heraeus published price series Yes Yes

The benchmark auctions behind the LBMA platinum and palladium prices cover only those two metals and have been run by ICE Benchmark Administration since 1 July 2026.

Why Iridium Metal Prices Differ Between Websites#

Iridium metal prices differ between websites because each site shows a different quote type, currency and time, such as a Johnson Matthey sponge price in dollars per ounce, a Umicore fabricated price in euros per kilogram or a retail bar price. Johnson Matthey alone publishes four regional settings a day, so two correct dollar prices can differ on one day.

Retail prices sit on another basis again: the iridium figure Strategic Metals Invest publishes is a retail price for private investors, not a wholesale quote. Every basis used here is listed under price data sources, and this page names its series beside each number.

What Moves the Iridium Price?#

The iridium price moves on by-product supply from South Africa, industrial demand and buying ahead of expected shortages.

Johnson Matthey calls iridium "by far the smallest and least liquid of the PGMs, so even relatively modest additional buying activity can cause significant volatility." World primary supply is about 7.1 tonnes a year, and the balance of the iridium market turns on shortfalls of 7,000 to 11,000 ounces (2025 and 2026, Johnson Matthey).

By-Product Supply From South Africa#

South Africa supplies more than 80% of world primary iridium (IPA/SFA, 2026); southern Africa as a whole accounts for up to about 95% (Johnson Matthey, 2022). Zimbabwe and Russia follow, and the International Platinum Group Metals Association (IPA) reports essentially no primary iridium from Europe.

Iridium is a by-product: mines produce it only because they mine platinum and palladium, so iridium output follows platinum and palladium mining decisions, not the iridium price. A higher iridium price therefore adds almost no new supply in the short run. The ore bodies behind this supply are covered under where iridium is found.

Iridium Demand: Electrochemical, Chemical, Electronics and Other Uses#

Iridium demand comes from four sectors in Johnson Matthey's balance: electrochemical, chemical, electrical and electronics, and other uses, with electrochemical demand the largest at 100,000 troy ounces in 2025. The four sectors, their 2025 demand (Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026) and example uses are listed below.

  • Electrochemical, 100,000 oz: electrode coatings for chlor-alkali plants, water treatment, electrowinning and copper foil, plus PEM electrolyzer anodes.
  • Other, 69,000 oz: aerospace and medical uses, including iridium-192 radiation sources.
  • Chemical, 34,000 oz: catalysts such as the iridium-based Cativa process for acetic acid.
  • Electrical and electronics, 33,000 oz: crucibles for growing single crystals, spark-plug tips and OLED emitter materials.

Total 2025 demand was 236,000 oz, and substitution runs both ways: Johnson Matthey reports that high iridium prices have made the rhodium-catalyzed Monsanto acetic acid process more competitive. Each application is described under iridium uses.

PEM Electrolyzers and Green Hydrogen#

PEM electrolyzers use about 400 kg of iridium per gigawatt of capacity today (US Department of Energy, 2022), which ties iridium demand to the pace of green hydrogen projects. Loadings are falling: Heraeus commercialized a 300 kg/GW design in 2023, manufacturers target 100 kg/GW, and WPIC sees 80 kg/GW as feasible by 2030.

How much capacity does one year of iridium build? At 400 kg/GW, Johnson Matthey's 7.1 tonnes of 2025 primary supply would build about 17.8 GW of PEM electrolyzers if every ounce went to them (DailyPlatinum calculation). Iridium therefore becomes a binding limit only at roughly 15 to 25 GW of PEM installations a year at today's loading, not at today's deployment. The engineering of iridium in PEM electrolyzers sets these loadings.

Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report of 14 May 2026 records the first commercial-scale use of iridium in PEM electrolysis in 2026.

Iridium Market Balance 2025 to 2026: Johnson Matthey#

Johnson Matthey forecasts an iridium shortfall of 11,000 troy ounces in 2026, with primary supply flat at 229,000 ounces and demand rising to 240,000 ounces (PGM Market Report, May 2026). Johnson Matthey calls the shortfall "modest ... as green hydrogen projects get underway in Europe." The full balance since 2021 is listed below in thousand troy ounces (koz).

Source: Johnson Matthey PGM Market Report, May 2026. Johnson Matthey revised 2021 supply by 24 koz between its 2025 and 2026 editions, so read each figure as plus or minus 10%.

The 2026 shortfall equals 4.6% of forecast demand, and Johnson Matthey publishes no secondary supply line for iridium to cover it. Market-level analysis of the iridium market continues from this balance.

What Is the Highest Iridium Price Ever?#

The highest iridium price on record is $8,000 per troy ounce, reached in the first quarter of 2026, according to Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026). Wikipedia places the peak in March 2026 and records it as iridium's highest price in inflation-adjusted terms as well. Three Johnson Matthey levels trace the path to the record, listed below.

Record Level (USD per oz t) Period Series and source
All-time high 8,000 Q1 2026 Johnson Matthey, PGM Market Report, May 2026
Previous peak about 6,300 2021 Johnson Matthey, PGM Market Report, May 2026
Plateau "either side of $4,500" 2022 to 2024 Johnson Matthey, PGM Market Report, May 2026

On the same Johnson Matthey series, the 2026 record stands about 27% above the 2021 peak. The record is Johnson Matthey's as of its May 2026 report; this section is re-checked against each new report.

Iridium Annual Average Prices 2021 to 2024#

Iridium's annual average price was $5,158.40 per troy ounce in 2021, $4,581.93 in 2022, $4,672.78 in 2023 and $4,810.40 in 2024 on the Engelhard unfabricated series reported by the USGS. The four averages (USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries, February 2026) are listed below with the change on each prior year.

Year Annual average (USD per oz t) Change on prior year
2021 5,158.40 n/a
2022 4,581.93 -11.2%
2023 4,672.78 +2.0%
2024 4,810.40 +2.9%

These are yearly averages, so they sit below the peaks in the Johnson Matthey table and never share a calculation with them. The iridium price chart shows the licensed daily series behind this page.

The 2021 Spike and the 2026 Record#

Iridium rose to about $6,300 per troy ounce in 2021 because buyers stocked metal beyond their immediate needs as a buffer against shortages, according to Johnson Matthey. Johnson Matthey counts that stockpiling as a movement in market stocks, not as demand, and describes the market as broadly balanced on pure supply and demand.

The 2021 spike destroyed some demand: Chinese makers of iridium crucibles moved some crucible formats to platinum, Johnson Matthey reports. Heraeus rates iridium crucibles for crystal growth at up to about 2,300 °C, and which formats platinum can take over is covered under iridium crucibles.

The 2026 record came in a market Johnson Matthey places in further deficit, as the first commercial-scale PEM electrolysis demand arrived.

Iridium Price vs Gold and Platinum Today#

Iridium costs 197.1%% of the gold price today, $8,150.00 against $4,135.60 per troy ounce. Above 100%, iridium is the more expensive metal; below 100%, it is the cheaper one.

Platinum costs $1,711.00 per troy ounce at the same moment, on the dealer spot basis of the platinum price today page. Any ratio between the two divides a refiner quote by a spot price, so it is indicative.

Iridium and platinum no longer move together. Platinum peaked at $2,923 per troy ounce on 26 January 2026 (WPIC), while iridium set its record later in the first quarter on hydrogen electrolysis demand.

Density, melting point, uses and value of the two metals are compared on iridium vs platinum.

Buy, Sell and Track Iridium at Today's Price#

Iridium buyers and sellers use today's quote as the reference for wholesale contracts, retail bar prices and scrap payouts. The same quote feeds the wider platinum group metals market.

Rhodium, ruthenium and the other metals follow their own quote logic, side by side under live PGM prices.

Buying Iridium: Wholesale Sponge and Retail Bars#

Wholesale iridium is sold as sponge to manufacturers with a genuine industrial need; Johnson Matthey does not open precious metal accounts for speculation or for individuals. An account needs a manufacturing need, know-your-customer checks and credit approval.

Private buyers therefore buy small bars from retail sellers, at retail prices for private investors rather than the wholesale quote. Routes, forms and costs for private holders are covered under iridium investment.

Selling and Recycling Iridium Scrap#

Recycled iridium moves through closed-loop industrial recycling, in which manufacturers return spent iridium parts and catalysts to a refiner. The owner keeps title to the metal, so Johnson Matthey nets this flow out of demand and shows no iridium secondary supply.

Payment follows the assayed iridium content, less the refiner's charges; the process is described under precious metal refining.

Iridium Price Alerts#

DailyPlatinum price alerts email you when the iridium quote crosses a level you set, in ounces, grams or kilograms and in any of 20 currencies. Setup is on price alerts, and the daily PGM price and market report records each business day's move.

Iridium Price FAQ#

How much is 1 oz of iridium worth?#

One troy ounce of iridium (31.1034768 g) is worth $8,150.00 on the dealer quote for iridium sponge at 5 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC. That is the wholesale value of pure sponge; a retail 1 oz bar costs more, and scrap pays less after refining charges.

What is the price of 1 gram of iridium?#

One gram of iridium costs $262.03 at today's quote, the troy-ounce price divided by 31.1034768. In rupees it is ₹25,234.62; gram prices in 20 currencies are on iridium price per gram today.

How much iridium is produced each year?#

World primary iridium supply was about 7.1 tonnes (229,000 troy ounces) in 2025, according to Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report (May 2026). Johnson Matthey expects the same 229,000 oz in 2026. Supply depth and scarcity are covered under how rare iridium is.

What is the current price of iridium ore?#

Iridium ore has no price of its own, because iridium is a by-product recovered from platinum and palladium ores and is valued only after refining. Miners realize iridium prices through offtake and refining contracts referenced to published quotes, less refining and treatment charges.

Can you invest in iridium?#

Iridium can be held only as physical metal, because no exchange-traded fund, futures contract or options contract on iridium exists. Private investors buy small bars at retail prices above the wholesale quote; the options are compared under buy iridium bullion.

What are iridium's symbol, atomic number and CAS number?#

Iridium has the symbol Ir, atomic number 77 and CAS number 7439-88-5, with an atomic mass of 192.22 (PubChem) and a density of 22.562 g/cm³. It melts at 2,719 K (2,446 °C). The element is covered on iridium (Ir), element 77, with iridium density, osmium vs iridium and iridium alloys.
