What Is DailyPlatinum's PGM Market News?#

DailyPlatinum's PGM market news is a running log of dated, named-source events in the platinum, palladium and rhodium markets, separate from the live spot-price widget the site runs on its price pages. Each entry pairs a headline with the report, filing or exchange release that supports it.

Live prices for platinum and the other five platinum group metals sit on a dedicated page; see platinum group metal prices today for the current spot quote in troy ounces, grams and kilograms. This news log instead covers the events behind those price moves: mine supply data, producer earnings, refiner deals and regulatory filings that a price ticker alone does not explain.

The wider supply and demand picture behind these events sits on platinum group metals market, which carries the quarterly deficit or surplus figures WPIC and Johnson Matthey each publish on their own basis.

What This Page Covers#

This page covers four kinds of PGM news: price-setting events, producer and refiner results, supply and demand data, and regulatory or trade developments.

  • Price-setting events: benchmark auction changes, exchange launches and record price readings, such as the LBMA Platinum Price auction and NYMEX platinum futures settlements.
  • Producer and refiner results: half-year and annual earnings, cost data and dividend announcements from mining and refining companies such as Sibanye-Stillwater and Johnson Matthey.
  • Supply and demand data: quarterly market-balance figures from the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) and Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report.
  • Regulatory and trade developments: import duty changes, corporate approaches and exchange approvals, such as the Guangzhou Futures Exchange's 2025 platinum futures launch.

How Often Platinum News Is Updated#

News entries are added each business day, matching the cadence of the LBMA Platinum Price auction and Johnson Matthey's base-price resets that most PGM news tracks. The LBMA Platinum Price is auctioned from 09:45 and 14:00 London time, not set at a fixed moment, according to ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA), while Johnson Matthey resets its base prices four times each business day, at 08:30 and 14:30 Hong Kong time, 09:00 London and 09:30 US Eastern.

Recent Platinum Group Metals Market News#

The most recent platinum group metals market news includes the World Platinum Investment Council's 9 September 2026 Platinum Quarterly, forecasting a 265,000-ounce 2026 surplus after a 2025 deficit of over 1.4 million ounces. The table below lists each dated event with its named source.

Date Headline Summary Source

8 Sep 2026 Sibanye-Stillwater opens restructuring talks on its Kwezi shaft Section 189A consultations begin on the Kwezi shaft, part of its Rustenburg operations, putting about 1,114 jobs at risk after losses of R208 million in 2024 and R91 million in 2025 Sibanye-Stillwater, reported by Mining Weekly
1 Sep 2026 Sibanye-Stillwater posts record H1 2026 results Six months to 30 June 2026: revenue of about R90 billion, adjusted EBITDA of R31.8 billion, profit of R18.8 billion and a record R19.6 billion in net cash from operations Sibanye-Stillwater H1 2026 results

27 Nov 2025 Guangzhou Futures Exchange launches China's first platinum futures GFEX lists CNY-denominated, physically settled platinum and palladium futures and options, China's first exchange-traded contracts for the two metals World Platinum Investment Council, citing GFEX

WPIC chief executive Trevor Raymond attributes the swing from deficit to surplus to investment outflows that occurred during the first half of the year, not to a change in industrial or jewelry demand. How WPIC's forecast compares with other named outlooks is tracked on platinum price forecast, and the size and causes of the deficit itself sit on platinum market deficit.

Sibanye-Stillwater's two September entries pull in opposite directions within one week: record group profit on 1 September, then Section 189A consultations on the Kwezi shaft on 8 September, a reminder that record metal prices do not by themselves fix a high-cost shaft's economics.

Johnson Matthey's completed sale of its Catalyst Technologies business narrows the company toward its core PGM refining and market-reporting business; how platinum group metal refiners rank by PGM-refining accreditation and capacity is tracked on its own page.

The Guangzhou Futures Exchange's launch gave China and the platinum market its first exchange-traded platinum contract, priced in yuan and settled in physical metal rather than cash. Contract terms for platinum futures, including the longer-running NYMEX 50-ounce contract, are compared separately.

Platinum News FAQ#

Is platinum expected to go up in price?#

No direction is certain; WPIC's Platinum Quarterly of 9 September 2026 forecasts a 265,000-ounce surplus for 2026, reversing its own Q1 2026 deficit forecast. Johnson Matthey's May 2026 report, on its own basis, still shows a fourth consecutive year of deficit, and the two houses' figures are never combined into one calculation.

Will platinum hit $3,000 an ounce?#

Platinum's record price is $2,923 per troy ounce, reached on 26 January 2026 (WPIC); no named forecaster in DailyPlatinum's sources puts a 2026-27 target at $3,000. Johnson Matthey's base-price basis reads the same event at $2,860.

What is the platinum price prediction for 2027?#

Platinum price predictions differ by forecaster and edition date; DailyPlatinum's forecast page names each one rather than averaging them. See platinum price forecast for every named, dated outlook.

Platinum has the symbol Pt, atomic number 78 and CAS number 7440-06-4 (PubChem). The element's structure, properties and uses are covered on platinum (Pt), element 78.
