Platinum extended its slide on Tuesday as surging oil prices revived fears of a December Fed rate hike, while UBS cut its palladium price forecast on weakening investor positioning. A study published in Nature Synthesis also reported a durable platinum catalyst for hydrogen production from ammonia. Both metals remain well below their 2026 highs heading into month-end.

Platinum extends decline as oil surge revives Fed rate-hike risk#
Platinum stayed under pressure on 27 October as elevated oil prices raised the odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike, according to FXEmpire, which linked last week's jump in oil prices to persistent December rate-hike risk and said a firmer US dollar was weighing on the metal. The outlet's technicals desk noted that platinum's drop below the $1,530 level raised the odds of a further decline toward lower support. TradingEconomics put the metal at $1,527.10 per troy ounce on 27 October 2026, a daily loss of 1.18% and a 12.47% retreat over the past month, on the CFD contract it tracks. Kitco's spot board showed platinum bid at $1,512.00/oz, down 0.92%, at 9:25 a.m. EST the same morning. The move adds to an already weak October for the metal: Valterra Platinum said on 23 October that it cut third-quarter refined PGM output 41% to 576,900 oz while rephasing maintenance into the quarter, though CEO Craig Miller said the company still expects to hit its 2026 guidance of 3 million to 3.4 million oz. With mine supply still constrained, the latest leg down looks driven more by macro positioning than by a change in physical fundamentals. UBS cuts palladium price forecast to around $1,100/oz#
Investing.com reported on 27 October that UBS trimmed its 12-month palladium price target to roughly $1,100 an ounce, $100 to $200 below the bank's earlier December, March and June calls. The bank pointed to softening investor positioning and an increasingly bearish tilt in palladium options markets as reasons for the more cautious view, and flagged that Chinese palladium imports fell from close to 8.6 metric tons in April to only 3.4 metric tons in September. UBS did note one supportive factor: a wider palladium discount to platinum is making it more economical to swap palladium back into gasoline autocatalysts, which could lend some support to automotive demand. The revision comes a day after Nornickel, which Reuters describes as the world's largest palladium producer, confirmed its 2026 output guidance of 2.415 million to 2.465 million ounces even as it warned that a nine-month overhaul of a flash-smelting unit at its Nadezhda Plant could crimp 2027-28 output. Platinum catalyst sustains ammonia-to-hydrogen reaction for 500 hours#
Researchers reported a platinum catalyst for cracking hydrogen out of ammonia that resists the fouling that normally shortens such catalysts' working life, in a study published in Nature Synthesis and summarized by Bioengineer.org on 27 October. The material pairs platinum nanoparticles with a nitrogen-doped carbon support containing scattered iron sites; in lab tests it reached an ammonia-oxidation mass activity of 733 amps per gram of platinum. According to the summary, the iron-containing support also lets the catalyst clean itself: nitrogen byproducts that would otherwise coat and deactivate the platinum are instead converted back into compounds that leave the surface, so the catalyst keeps working instead of fouling over time. Combined with pulsed operating conditions, the setup ran continuously for more than 2,000 hours at a lower current density and for 500 hours at a higher one. Bioengineer.org's summary notes the results come from the authors' own measurements and that outside labs would need to reproduce them before the catalyst's performance in real electrolyzer equipment is established. If the durability holds up, it would be relevant to ammonia-based hydrogen production, a demand niche alongside PEM electrolysis for platinum group metals. Prices and market context#
Platinum and palladium both fell on 27 October across the series DailyPlatinum checked. TradingEconomics' CFD-tracked contracts showed platinum at $1,527.10/oz, down 12.47% over the past month, and palladium at $1,035/oz, down 15.37% over the month and 25.78% below year-ago levels. Kitco's spot quotes at 9:25 a.m. EST had platinum bid at $1,512.00/oz and palladium bid at $997.00/oz, with rhodium bid at $8,625.00/oz. The weakness comes against a backdrop of mine-supply disruption at South African producers, including Valterra's 41% refined-output cut for the third quarter, even as Nornickel held its 2026 palladium guidance of 2.415 million to 2.465 million ounces. For broader balance context, the World Platinum Investment Council's Q2 2026 Platinum Quarterly, published 9 September 2026, put the 2026 platinum market at a projected 265,000 oz surplus, reversed from a 297,000 oz deficit forecast in Q1, alongside a 2025 deficit revised to more than 1 million ounces. What to watch#
- The Federal Reserve's policy decision this week, which FXEmpire's 27 October analysis flagged as a key driver of pressure on platinum via dollar strength and rate-hike odds.
- Valterra Platinum's full-year 2026 results, due after its financial year ends 31 December 2026, measured against guidance of 3 million to 3.4 million ounces in concentrate and refined metal.
- Nornickel's nine-month overhaul of a flash-smelting unit at its Nadezhda Plant, set to begin in 2027 and expected to affect 2027-28 output of nickel, copper and palladium.
- Whether UBS's new 12-month palladium forecast of around $1,100/oz holds up against Chinese import demand, after imports fell from 8.6 metric tons in April to 3.4 metric tons in September.
