What Is the Palladium Price Today?#
The palladium price today is $1,165.00 per troy ounce in US dollars (OTC spot, 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC), +1.13% over the last 24 hours. That is what 1 oz of palladium is worth right now: one troy ounce of pure metal at wholesale spot, before dealer premiums, taxes or refining charges. The widget adds the bid, the ask and the day's range.
Palladium is one of six platinum group metals (PGMs), and only palladium and platinum have both a London benchmark auction and listed futures. All six live quotes sit in one table under platinum group metal prices today.

Where Today's Palladium Price Comes From#
The price on this page is an over-the-counter (OTC) spot quote for palladium from a market-data vendor, stamped with the time of its last update. It is not the LBMA Palladium Price, whose real-time and historical data need a license from ICE Benchmark Administration (IBA) since 1 July 2026, according to LBMA. The source label under the widget states four things, listed below.
- Source: the vendor and the basis "OTC spot".
- Time: the last update in local time and UTC.
- Basis: the bid, the ask and the reference close for the daily change.
- Delay status: a "delayed" badge after 15 minutes without a quote.
Two vendors' feeds can differ at the same moment. Every feed and its license are documented under price data sources.
What Is Palladium, and Why Does It Have a Spot Price?#
Palladium is a platinum group metal (Pd, atomic number 46, CAS 7440-05-3) priced as a precious metal because two countries mine most of it and carmakers buy most of it. Its atomic mass is 106.42 and its common oxidation states are 0, +2 and +4; the element is covered on palladium (Pd), element 46.
Why is palladium so special on a price screen? Concentration: Russia and South Africa supplied 78.9% of primary palladium in 2025, and catalytic converters took 81.1% of demand (Johnson Matthey, May 2026), so a shock in one country or one industry moves the whole market. Palladium has a spot price because it trades as wholesale metal in London and Zurich, where the London Platinum and Palladium Market (LPPM) listed 33 palladium Good Delivery refiners on 6 August 2026.
William Hyde Wollaston named palladium in August 1802 after the asteroid Pallas, discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers on 28 March 1802. Crustal abundance and how rare palladium is are covered on how rare palladium is.
Palladium Spot Price: Bid, Ask and Spread#
The palladium spot price is the price for palladium delivered within two business days, quoted as a bid (the price dealers pay) and an ask (the price dealers charge) per troy ounce. IBA counts only days that are business days in both the UK and the US. The spread is the gap between the two, currently $1,161.00 against $1,205.00.
Why is the palladium spread wider than platinum's? Turnover: spreads widen in the order gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, and palladium trades less than half as much as platinum in London. LBMA's trade reporting (LBMA-i) put the 12-week average value of palladium trades at $6.96 billion for the period ending 31 July 2026, against $15.50 billion for platinum and $942.57 billion for gold.
Why Palladium Coin, Bar and Scrap Prices Differ From the Spot Price#
Palladium coins and bars cost more than spot because of dealer premiums and tax; scrap pays less after refining charges. Spot refers to wholesale metal: unallocated palladium in London, backed by LPPM Good Delivery plates of at least 99.95% purity weighing 1 to 6 kg (32.151 to 192.904 troy ounces).
Tax widens the gap more for palladium than for gold or platinum, because bullion exemptions cover gold, sometimes platinum, but not palladium. The treatment in four jurisdictions, checked in September 2026, is listed below.
| Jurisdiction | Palladium bullion | Platinum bullion | Gold bullion | Instrument and source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 20% VAT | 20% VAT | Exempt (investment gold) | HMRC VAT Notice 701/21 |
| EU member states | Standard VAT rate (Germany 19%) | Standard VAT rate | Exempt (investment gold) | Council Directive 2006/112/EC, Articles 344 to 356 (EUR-Lex) |
| Singapore | 9% GST | Exempt at 99% purity or more | Exempt at 99.5% purity or more | Investment Precious Metals exemption, in force since 1 October 2012 (Singapore Customs, IRAS) |
| Australia | 10% GST | GST-free at 99% fineness or more | GST-free at 99.5% fineness or more | ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10 (Australian Taxation Office) |
Palladium pays the standard rate in all four; platinum is exempt in two.
Dealer premiums come on top: on 5 to 6 August 2026, JM Bullion priced a 10 oz palladium bar 12.6% and a 1 oz American Palladium Eagle 71.7% above its own palladium ask. Current premiums by product are tracked on premiums over spot.
How Is the Palladium Price Set?#
The palladium price comes from five series: the LBMA auction, NYMEX futures, GFEX futures, Johnson Matthey base prices and dealer spot quotes. The auction runs twice a day, the futures trade 100-ounce and 1,000-gram contracts, Johnson Matthey quotes sponge four times a day, and dealers quote continuously.
LBMA Palladium Price: The London Auction After Platinum#
The LBMA Palladium Price is the benchmark for unallocated palladium in London, auctioned twice a day right after each platinum auction by IBA since 1 July 2026, after the London Metal Exchange (December 2014 to 30 June 2026). Platinum auctions start at 09:45 and 14:00 London time, so palladium has no fixed start or publication time. IBA's methodology (July 2026) sets six steps, listed below.
- Queue orders in Round Zero, from 30 minutes before the platinum auction until the palladium auction starts.
- Publish a round price set by IBA's algorithm.
- Enter, amend or cancel orders of 1 oz to 100,000 oz for 60 seconds.
- Test the imbalance between buying and selling against 4,000 oz.
- Adjust the price and repeat while the imbalance exceeds 4,000 oz.
- Publish the final price in US dollars to 2 decimal places, with indicative GBP and EUR.
Matched trades settle bilaterally at the final price plus a seller's premium of USD 0.50 per ounce, with no central counterparty. Imbalance, holiday and error rules for the LBMA palladium price are on LBMA palladium price.
NYMEX Palladium Futures: The 100-Ounce Contract#
NYMEX palladium futures are contracts for 100 troy ounces, twice the platinum contract, quoted in US dollars per troy ounce. Active months follow a March, June, September and December cycle, and deliverable metal must be 99.95% pure, the same 0.9995 minimum that IRC § 408(m)(3)(B) applies to palladium bullion in US retirement accounts.
Open interest stood at 18,699 contracts, or 1.870 million troy ounces, on 28 July 2026 (CFTC). Positioning ran opposite to platinum's: non-commercial traders were net short 4,767 palladium contracts while commercial traders were net long. NYMEX warehouses held 254.7 koz of palladium on 30 July 2026, 201.6 koz of it registered for delivery against NYMEX palladium futures: see NYMEX palladium futures.
Johnson Matthey Base Prices and GFEX Palladium Futures#
Johnson Matthey base prices are quotes for palladium sponge of at least 99.95% purity, reset four times each business day: 08:30 and 14:30 Hong Kong time, 09:00 London and 09:30 US Eastern, in US dollars per troy ounce. A base price is one firm's quote to wholesale customers, not a regulated benchmark; Johnson Matthey base prices are compared with other refiner quotes separately.
Sponge is the powder catalyst and chemical makers buy, so the base price tracks industrial metal: see palladium sponge.
China's Guangzhou Futures Exchange (GFEX) launched China's first onshore palladium futures on 27 November 2025, physically settled, 1,000 grams per lot and priced in yuan per gram, according to the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC). More on GFEX and the China market.
What Moves the Palladium Price?#
The palladium price moves on Russian and South African supply, carmaker demand, platinum substitution and recycling, with investment flows as a smaller swing factor. Each driver is listed below with its direction and dated evidence.
| Driver | Direction of effect | Dated evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Russian supply | Fewer Russian ounces tighten the market | 2,950 koz of 6,589 koz primary supply in 2025, forecast 2,450 koz in 2026 (Johnson Matthey, May 2026) |
| South African supply | Mine output adds supply | 2,246 koz in 2025, 34.1% of primary supply (Johnson Matthey) |
| Carmaker demand | Gasoline car output sets most demand | 8,227 koz, 81.1% of 2025 demand (Johnson Matthey) |
| Platinum substitution | Cheaper platinum replaces palladium in catalysts | Substitution added 720 koz of platinum demand in 2024 (Metals Focus) |
| Recycling | Recovered converter metal adds supply | Automotive recycling 2,657 koz in 2025, forecast 2,945 koz in 2026 (Johnson Matthey) |
| Investment flows | ETF selling returns metal to the market | ETF holdings 1.14 Moz at end-2025, about 100 koz sold in Q1 2026 (Johnson Matthey) |
Platinum shares four of these drivers, so what drives the platinum and palladium price is compared under what drives the platinum and palladium price.
Supply: Russia, South Africa and the 2026 US Trade Case#
Russia supplied 44.8% of the world's 6.589 million ounces of primary palladium in 2025, South Africa 34.1%, according to Johnson Matthey (May 2026). Johnson Matthey forecasts Russian supply falling to 2.45 million ounces in 2026, with no further sales from refined stocks; Nornickel produced 2.73 million ounces in 2025, detailed under Nornickel production.
Sanctions have redrawn where Russian metal goes. The LPPM suspended two Russian refineries from its Good Delivery lists on 8 April 2022, US imports of Russian palladium ceased in August 2025, and since September 2025 Johnson Matthey reports more Russian palladium moving into Chinese bonded "entrepot" zones. See Russian palladium supply.
The 2026 US trade case left no duty in force. The US Department of Commerce set a final anti-dumping margin of 132.83% on unwrought Russian palladium on 28 April 2026 (case A-821-840) and made an affirmative final countervailing duty determination on 20 May 2026 (case C-821-841). The US International Trade Commission found no injury in June 2026, so no order was issued; Sibanye-Stillwater's appeal, filed at the US Court of International Trade on 16 July 2026, was pending on 24 September 2026.
Demand: What Palladium Is Used For#
Palladium is used mainly in car catalytic converters, 81.1% of 2025 demand, then in electronics, chemical catalysts and dental alloys (Johnson Matthey, May 2026). Palladium dominates gasoline three-way catalysts, platinum diesel ones. The five demand groups are listed below.
- Autocatalysts: three-way catalysts in gasoline and hybrid vehicles.
- Electronics: electrical and electronic components.
- Chemical catalysts: palladium on carbon for hydrogenation and palladium(II) chloride for the Wacker process.
- Dental and biomedical alloys.
- Investment and jewelry: bars, coins, funds and Pd950 jewelry.
All palladium uses, including hydrogen-purification membranes, are on palladium uses. Johnson Matthey's 2025 demand by sector, 10,140,000 oz in total, is listed below.
| Sector | 2025 demand (koz) | Share of total |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive | 8,227 | 81.1% |
| Electrical and electronics | 535 | 5.3% |
| Chemical | 519 | 5.1% |
| Investment | 382 | 3.8% |
| Dental and biomedical | 163 | 1.6% |
| Pollution control | 131 | 1.3% |
| Other | 100 | 1.0% |
| Jewelry | 83 | 0.8% |
| Total | 10,140 | 100% |
Johnson Matthey forecasts automotive demand falling to 7,829 koz in 2026; loadings and emissions rules are covered under autocatalyst demand for palladium.
Platinum Substitution, Recycling and Electric Vehicles#
Platinum replaces palladium almost one for one in gasoline catalysts, so cheaper platinum pulls demand away from palladium. WPIC (January 2024) puts the ratio close to 1:1, and Metals Focus estimates substitution added 720,000 oz of platinum demand in 2024.
Why does the switch take years? Carmakers change catalyst recipes almost only on new models, about 15% of the market a year, and keep them for a platform life of about seven years (WPIC). WPIC (September 2025) expects platinum-palladium substitution to reverse, bringing 250,000 oz back to palladium by 2029: see platinum-palladium substitution.
Recycling and electric vehicles cut demand for mined metal: Johnson Matthey forecasts automotive recycling rising from 2,657,000 oz in 2025 to 2,945,000 oz in 2026, and a pure battery electric vehicle carries no catalyst. US battery electric sales fell 27% year on year in Q1 2026 after the federal tax credit ended (Johnson Matthey, WPIC).
Regional detail: electric vehicles and PGM demand.
Palladium Market Balance 2025 and 2026: Johnson Matthey and Metals Focus#
Johnson Matthey forecasts a 214,000-ounce palladium surplus in 2026, the first since 2011 (PGM Market Report, May 2026), after a 416,000-oz deficit in 2025. Metals Focus data published by WPIC on 11 June 2026 still show a 91,000-oz deficit for 2026. The two houses define supply and demand differently, so their balances are listed below in separate rows.
| House and publication | 2025 balance | 2026 forecast | Next turn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johnson Matthey, PGM Market Report (May 2026) | Deficit of 416 koz | Surplus of 214 koz | First surplus since 2011 |
| Metals Focus data, WPIC Platinum Essentials (11 June 2026; WPIC estimates from 2026) | Deficit of 1,069 koz | Deficit of 91 koz | Surplus of 325 koz forecast for 2027 |
Two houses, two definitions: never add or average.
Johnson Matthey's surplus comes from demand falling 9%, to 9,245 koz, faster than supply. Each house's full tables are on palladium market balance.
Each named, dated palladium price forecast is collected on palladium price forecast.
What Is the Highest Palladium Price Ever?#

PGM price records across all six metals are set out in PGM price records.
Palladium Price Cycles: 2001, 2016 to 2022 and 2025 to 2026#
Palladium has had three large price cycles: 2000 to 2001, 2016 to 2022 and 2025 to 2026. Each is listed below with its cause.
- 2000 to 2001: Russian export delays met autocatalyst demand of 4.5 Moz in 2001 (SFA Oxford); the LBMA price then fell 58.1% during 2001, from $1,050 to $440, and Ford booked a loss of nearly $1 billion on stockpiled metal.
- 2016 to 2022: diesel's collapse moved car output to gasoline, Euro 6d and China 6 raised palladium loadings, and the market ran a deficit every year from 2012 (Johnson Matthey).
- 2025 to 2026: the LBMA price rose 67.0% in 2025, from $994 to $1,660; palladium peaked above $2,100 in January 2026 and fell to $1,448 by end-March after war broke out in Iran and the dollar strengthened (Johnson Matthey).
Key annual averages on metalcharts.org's LBMA-based series are listed below.
| Year | Annual average (USD per oz t) | Cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 692 | 2000 to 2001 squeeze |

No 2025 row: no verified full-year 2025 average exists yet.
On this series the annual average has moved between minus 52.7% (1981) and plus 103.0% (1983) in one year. The palladium price chart draws the path live: palladium price chart.
Palladium Price vs Platinum and Gold Price Today#
Palladium trades at 68.1%% of the platinum price and 28.2%% of the gold price today, $1,165.00 against $1,711.00 for platinum and $4,135.60 for gold per troy ounce. Below 100%, palladium is the cheaper metal.
The platinum vs palladium gap matters more than gold because the two metals substitute in catalysts, so today's gap shapes carmakers' choices for years. Both are compared on platinum vs palladium.
The widget shows both ratios beside the palladium price, updated with every quote.
The live platinum quote is on platinum price today.
When Palladium Traded Above Platinum: 2017 to 2025#
Palladium reached parity with platinum on 27 September 2017 and stayed above it until late 2025, the first time it had matched platinum since 2001. Its annual average rose 41.8% in 2017 while platinum's fell.
Platinum regained its premium by end-2025: at end-March 2026 it stood at $1,908 against palladium's $1,448 (Johnson Matthey), and metalcharts.org put the platinum-to-palladium ratio at 1.28 on 6 August 2026. Those eight years pulled platinum into gasoline catalysts; the full platinum vs palladium ratio history is on platinum vs palladium.
Buy, Sell and Track Palladium at Today's Price#
Today's spot price is the reference for palladium scrap payouts, bullion premiums and price alerts. The same spot price anchors the wider platinum group metals market, from mine supply to recycling.
Live prices for the other five metals sit together under platinum group metal prices today.
Selling Palladium: Catalytic Converters, Scrap and Jewelry#
Palladium sellers are paid on palladium content, not gross weight, after assay and a refining charge. A 10 g Pd950 ring holds 9.5 g of palladium, and the scrap palladium price starts from that fine content.
Catalytic converters are the largest recycled source: automotive scrap returned 2,657,000 oz of palladium in 2025, 40% of that year's primary supply (Johnson Matthey). Content varies by converter, so refiners assay before paying; see palladium in a catalytic converter and converter scrap value.
Buying Palladium: Bars, Coins and ETFs#
Palladium buyers pay spot plus a dealer premium on bars and coins, or an annual fee on backed funds. See investing in palladium and how to buy platinum and palladium.
Two sovereign coins have their own pages: the Royal Canadian Mint's Palladium Maple Leaf and the US Mint's American Palladium Eagle, first issued in 2017.
WisdomTree Physical Palladium, one of the palladium ETFs, charges 0.49% a year with HSBC Bank plc as custodian (justETF, September 2026). The Sprott Physical Platinum and Palladium Trust held 161,914 oz of palladium on 31 August 2026 at a 0.78% expense ratio (Sprott): see Sprott trust.

Palladium Price FAQ#
How much is 1 oz of palladium worth today?#
One troy ounce of palladium (31.1034768 g) is worth $1,165.00 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:35 UTC. That is the spot value of pure metal: a 1 oz coin sells above it because of the dealer premium and, in the UK, 20% VAT, while scrap pays below it after refining charges. In euros it is €1,039.03.
Why is palladium so cheap compared with its 2022 high?#
Palladium sits −63.69% from the high of this page's price series, and far below its $3,440.76 record of 7 March 2022, because carmakers switched to platinum, recycling grew and Johnson Matthey expects a 2026 surplus. ETF holders also sold about 100,000 oz in Q1 2026 after holdings reached 1.14 Moz at the end of 2025, the highest since early 2015 (Johnson Matthey).
Is palladium worth more than gold?#
Palladium is worth 28.2%% of gold per troy ounce today, so it is the cheaper metal whenever that figure sits below 100%. It also costs more to hold: BullionVault charged 0.48% a year to store palladium against 0.12% for gold on 6 August 2026. The price and value case is set out on palladium vs gold.
Who is the biggest buyer of palladium?#
The car industry is the biggest buyer of palladium, with 8,227,000 oz, or 81.1% of 2025 demand (Johnson Matthey). Electronics makers (535,000 oz) and chemical producers (519,000 oz) each took about 5%. Investors bought 382,000 oz in 2025; Johnson Matthey forecasts 115,000 oz of net selling in 2026.
Do pawn shops buy palladium, and is palladium jewelry worth anything?#
Palladium jewelry is worth its palladium content: UK hallmarks read 500, 950 or 999, so Pd950 is 95% palladium. UK hallmarking has been compulsory for palladium articles over 1 g since 1 January 2010, and the fineness mark sits in a palladium-specific shield, which tells palladium jewelry from platinum or white gold; see palladium jewelry alloys.
Demand is small: 83,000 oz (2.5 t) in 2025 (Johnson Matthey), against a Chinese peak of 37 t in 2005. Payouts follow the scrap palladium price.
Are there palladium stocks?#
Palladium has no share of its own; miners such as Nornickel (2.73 million ounces in 2025, Johnson Matthey) and Sibanye-Stillwater produce it, alongside platinum and other metals. Nornickel's output is covered under Nornickel production, and shares, funds and bullion under investing in platinum group metals.
What are palladium's symbol, atomic number and CAS number?#
Palladium has the symbol Pd, atomic number 46 and CAS number 7440-05-3 (PubChem), with an atomic mass of 106.42. Its melting point is 1,828 K (1,554.9 °C) and its density 12.007 g/cm3. The element itself is covered on palladium (Pd), element 46.
