How This Osmium Price Chart Works#
This chart plots one series, the Osmium World Council's daily administered price for crystalline osmium, not a traded price, since osmium has no exchange, benchmark or dealer market. The Council resets the crystalline figure once a day, adjusting it "to take the influence of inflation into account," a mechanism no other PGM price uses. The series is short, starting in January 2022, not a decades-long exchange archive, so the timeframe toggles run only as far as it reaches.
- 1W and 1M: the crystalline price's daily closes; there is no 1D view, since the price changes too rarely for an intraday line, and Fine-Osmium is not plotted.
- 6M to All: the default 1-year view, then 5Y and All; "All" shows the whole series from January 2022, not decades.
The current administered figures for both grades also sit on osmium price today.
Osmium Historical Price Data#
Osmium's price record is necessarily short, since no exchange or benchmark has tracked the metal and its administered quotes run back only weeks in public form. The Osmium World Council's crystalline figure moved from €2,253.39/g on 6 August 2026 to €2,289.84/g on 24 September 2026, up about 1.6%, while Fine-Osmium moved from €53.94/g to €54.30/g over the same window, up roughly 0.7%.
| Record | Value | Date | Series | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crystalline osmium (99.9995%) | €2,289.84/g | 24 Sep 2026 | Osmium World Council administered price | osmium-preis.com |
| Crystalline osmium (99.9995%) | €2,253.39/g | 6 Aug 2026 | Osmium World Council administered price | osmium-preis.com |
| Fine-Osmium (GFO) | €54.30/g | 24 Sep 2026 | Osmium World Council administered price | osmium-preis.com |
| Fine-Osmium (GFO) | €53.94/g | 6 Aug 2026 | Osmium World Council administered price | osmium-preis.com |
No verified all-time high or low exists for osmium on a market basis, because there has never been a market to set one; the figures above are dated snapshots of an administered quote, not the outcome of buying and selling.
What Moves the Osmium Price#
Four factors move the osmium price, none of them a trading imbalance:
- The Osmium World Council's own daily inflation adjustment to the crystalline quote, a mechanism no other PGM price uses.
- Extreme scarcity: world osmium production runs to only about 500 to 550 kilograms a year (SFA (Oxford), corroborated by the IPA Osmium Factsheet, May 2026), the scarcest of the six PGMs by a wide margin.
- Dependence on other metals' refining: osmium is recovered only as a trace co-product of platinum and palladium refining, so supply tracks those schedules, not an osmium-specific mine plan.
- Collector rather than industrial demand: crystalline-grade buyers are mainly collectors purchasing serial-numbered bars, which is why the Council can set its own price with no trading floor to test it against.
Why Osmium Has No Exchange or Spot Price#
No exchange, benchmark administrator, refiner or regulated auction quotes osmium. NYMEX and the LBMA benchmark family stop at platinum and palladium, and Johnson Matthey's Base Price set excludes osmium, covering only platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium and ruthenium; Umicore and Heraeus, which quote those five, list none for osmium either. The Osmium World Council's two quotes are therefore the only regularly published osmium prices in existence, and neither is a spot price in the sense platinum or gold traders use the term.
The Osmium Institute Price and Grades#
The Osmium World Council, the body behind the osmium-preis.com and osmium.com network, sets three grade prices a day, not one. Crystalline osmium, at 99.9995% purity, is the reference grade and by far the most expensive; Fine-Osmium (GFO), the purified but uncrystallized form, trades at roughly a fortieth of that price; and HighTech-Ready-Osmium (HTRO) is not an independently observed grade at all, since the Council sets it at exactly half the crystalline figure by construction.
| Grade | Purity | Price (24 Sep 2026) | Administering body |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crystalline osmium | 99.9995% | €2,289.84/g | Osmium World Council |
| HighTech-Ready-Osmium (HTRO) | Derived, exactly half of crystalline | €1,144.92/g | Osmium World Council |
| Fine-Osmium (GFO) | Purified, uncrystallized | €54.30/g | Osmium World Council |
Any figure that calls crystalline osmium's roughly €2,290/g price "the osmium price" without naming the grade overstates the metal's cost about 42 times against the Fine-Osmium figure, since the crystalline product is a serial-numbered collector item priced well above raw metal.
Osmium Price by Unit#
Osmium converts between the gram, troy ounce and kilogram at 31.1034768 grams per troy ounce, the same factor as every other PGM, though the price behind each unit below is the crystalline administered quote, not a market price.
| Weight | Grams | Troy ounces | Price (USD, live) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 gram | 1 | 0.0321507466 | $2,625.91 |
| 10 grams | 10 | 0.321507466 | $26,259.14 |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1034768 | 1 | $81,675.05 |
| 1 kilogram | 1,000 | 32.1507466 | $2,625,913.83 |
The same figures sit on osmium price per gram today and osmium price per kilogram today, and any other weight converts with the same factor in the troy ounce converter.
Osmium vs Gold and Other PGMs#
Compared with gold, crystalline osmium's administered price runs far above gold's gram price, but the two are not comparable: gold trades on a liquid global market, while crystalline osmium is one institute's set price for a collector product. A more meaningful comparison against osmium's sibling PGMs is physical, not financial: at 22.587 g/cm3, osmium is the densest naturally occurring element, 17.1% denser than gold and 5.3% denser than platinum, a margin over iridium's 22.562 g/cm3 settled only by 1990s-era X-ray crystallography. That question is explored in full on osmium vs iridium: which is the densest element.
Osmium Price History and Forecast#
The narrative behind each move in the Osmium World Council's quotes, and any named analyst view on where they head next, belongs on osmium's own price history and price forecast pages; until those publish, the dated table above is DailyPlatinum's running record of the metal's administered price moves.
Other PGM Price Charts#
DailyPlatinum publishes a live chart for each of the six platinum group metals, since none of them tracks the others on a fixed ratio.
- Platinum price chart: an over-the-counter spot quote, for a metal with an exchange-cleared benchmark and NYMEX futures.
- Palladium price chart: the other exchange-traded PGM.
- Rhodium price chart: a dealer quote supplied by our data vendor.
- Iridium price chart: a dealer quote supplied by our data vendor, with its own 2026 record.
- Ruthenium price chart: the metal Johnson Matthey does quote, unlike osmium.
Buying, Selling and Tracking Osmium#
Osmium buyers track the Osmium World Council's grade prices because no exchange-traded fund, futures market or IRA-eligible bullion channel exists for the metal; 26 U.S.C. Section 408(m)(3)(B) names only gold, silver, platinum and palladium as retirement-account-eligible metals. Two routes remain:
- Crystalline osmium as an investment: physical exposure through the Osmium World Council's own network.
- Scrap platinum group metals: where byproduct osmium recovered from spent catalysts is sold.
Osmium Price Chart FAQ#
How much is 1 oz of osmium worth?#
One troy ounce of crystalline osmium (99.9995% purity) costs $81,675.05 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC, an administered price, not a traded spot price. The cheaper Fine-Osmium grade above runs to a small fraction of that same-day figure.
What is the price of 1 g of osmium?#
One gram of crystalline osmium costs $2,625.91 at 5 Oct 2026, 15:30 UTC, while one gram of Fine-Osmium (GFO) cost €54.30 on 24 September 2026, roughly a fortieth of that figure. The grade named matters more for osmium than for any other PGM.
How much is 1 lb of osmium?#
One pound (453.59237 g) of Fine-Osmium at the 24 September 2026 rate of €54.30/g works out to about €24,630; the same weight of crystalline osmium at €2,289.84/g works out to just over €1.0 million. Neither is a market price; both are the Osmium World Council's own dated quotes.
Is osmium worth anything?#
Yes: the Osmium World Council publishes a daily price for both crystalline osmium and Fine-Osmium, running from about €54 to about €2,290/g depending on grade as of 24 September 2026, though neither figure is set by trading and osmium has no retail bullion or ETF market the way platinum does.
Can I touch osmium?#
Solid, consolidated osmium metal, such as the crystalline bars the Osmium World Council prices, carries no established handling hazard from ordinary short contact. The real industrial-hygiene risk sits with finely divided osmium powder, which slowly forms toxic osmium tetroxide vapor in air, the same volatility refiners use to separate osmium from other PGMs.
Which metal will boom in 2026?#
No single PGM is established as 2026's biggest mover; ruthenium set a Johnson Matthey Base Price all-time high of $1,750/oz on 13 March 2026, Metals Focus's Wilma Swarts forecasts a ruthenium deficit of 203,000 ounces for 2026, and the World Platinum Investment Council's Q2 2026 Platinum Quarterly flipped its 2026 platinum forecast from deficit to a 265,000-ounce surplus. Osmium has no supply, demand or forecast series published by any of these bodies.
