Platinum group metal markets on Wednesday were driven mainly by corporate and research news rather than by a major price move. Northam Platinum received a credit rating upgrade, Southern Palladium filed a quarterly report confirming its balance sheet can fund completion of a definitive feasibility study at Bengwenyama, and South Korean researchers detailed a ruthenium catalyst designed to cut precious-metal use in hydrogen production. Platinum and palladium both traded lower, extending a weak week.

Northam Platinum's credit rating lifted to AA(ZA)#
Credit rating agency GCR Ratings raised Northam Holding's national-scale long-term issuer rating to AA(ZA) from A+(ZA) on Wednesday, pointing to a strengthened operating profile and a balance sheet with no net debt. The agency simultaneously lifted the group's short-term rating to A1+(ZA) from A1(ZA) and assigned a stable outlook. GCR pointed to Northam's position among the lower-cost producers in the sector and its rising production as factors likely to keep supporting financial performance after record results for the financial year ended 30 June 2026, and said the group is cutting debt while holding ample liquidity, which it said leaves Northam with significant flexibility.
Northam Platinum's JSE-listed shares gained almost 3% in early Wednesday trading following the announcement. The move shows how credit markets are rewarding lower-cost, expanding PGM producers even with metal prices well below their January 2026 highs. Southern Palladium's September-quarter report: Bengwenyama funded through DFS#
Southern Palladium (ASX:SPD, JSE:SDL) lodged its quarterly activities and cashflow report for the quarter ended 30 September 2026 on 28 October 2026. The company said its balance sheet remains strong enough to fund completion of the Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) and early mine-development work at its Bengwenyama PGM-chrome project in South Africa's Bushveld Complex, even as its cash balance fell to approximately A$20.06 million at quarter-end from A$23.88 million on 30 June 2026. During the quarter, DFS engineering work focused on incorporating improved metallurgical results into the process-plant design, alongside geotechnical and infill drilling; the company said the December quarter will bring continued permitting work for early site preparations, contractor engagement and further flowsheet testing.
The report also recaps two recent milestones behind the stronger project economics: an updated prefeasibility study released 13 October 2026 that lifted Bengwenyama's post-tax net present value 129% to US$1,961 million (8% real discount rate, 100% project basis) with an internal rate of return of 39.1%, and a 30-year Mining Right granted by South Africa's mining regulator on 7 August 2026. Bengwenyama is one of several undeveloped Bushveld PGM projects investors are tracking for signs of where new primary supply could come from later this decade; see DailyPlatinum's Sudbury Basin geology page and platinum stocks overview for comparable development-stage names.
KAIST unveils ruthenium catalyst using a quarter of the precious metal#
Researchers at South Korea's KAIST, led by Professor Jinwoo Lee, announced on 28 October 2026 a water-electrolysis catalyst that arranges three to four ruthenium atoms into a cooperative "atom-layer neighbor" cluster instead of letting them aggregate into larger particles. According to KAIST's announcement, the design matched the hydrogen-production performance of a commercial platinum catalyst while using only about a quarter of the precious-metal loading, a result the university said could help lower the cost of green hydrogen. The project involved collaborators from KAIST's chemistry department, Konkuk University, the Korea Basic Science Institute and the Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology.
The Herald Business reported that the catalyst's degradation rate was roughly halved after 500 hours of continuous operation, and that it reached a current density of 9.82 amperes per square centimeter when built into an anion-exchange-membrane electrolysis device. The research adds to a steady stream of academic work targeting lower precious-metal loadings in electrolysis, relevant background for DailyPlatinum's PGM catalysts in chemistry and ruthenium element pages, alongside ruthenium's live price.
Prices and market context#
Platinum traded at $1,535.32 per ounce, up 1.37% on the day, as of 13:18 UTC on 28 October 2026, according to FXEmpire. The metal's 52-week range on that series stands at $1,474.64 to $2,882.37, with a year-to-date decline of 27.95%. Separately, BullionVault's live platinum price showed a 5.59% decline over the past week as of 28 October 2026, 14:26 GMT. Platinum remains well below the record $2,923 per ounce it reached on 26 January 2026, according to WPIC data.
Palladium traded at $1,022 per ounce as of 9:11 a.m. ET on 28 October 2026, according to Fortune's precious-metals price table. Both metals remain well off their early-2026 peaks as investors weigh the physical market balance: the World Platinum Investment Council's most recent Platinum Quarterly, published 9 September 2026, turned its 2026 platinum forecast to a surplus after revising the 2025 deficit to more than 1 million ounces, with above-ground stocks estimated at roughly 3.4 months of demand by year-end. What to watch#
- Southern Palladium's DFS engineering and permitting work through the December 2026 quarter, including further flowsheet optimization and contractor engagement at Bengwenyama.
- Progress on permits for Southern Palladium's planned early box-cut and decline development, which the board has approved subject to outstanding waste management and water use approvals.
- Further market reaction to Northam's AA(ZA) upgrade and its effect on the company's cost of capital.
- Platinum and palladium price action after a weak week, as markets continue to digest the WPIC's shift to a forecast 2026 platinum surplus.
