Northam Platinum produced a record 938,754 troy ounces of platinum-group metals on a 4E basis (platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold) from its own operations in the year ended 30 June 2026, up 4.4% on FY2025, according to the company's production update of 14 July 2026. The JSE-listed producer runs three mines on South Africa's Bushveld Complex, sends its concentrate out for toll refining, and disclosed in August 2026 that it had received an unsolicited approach for a possible corporate transaction. Its ownership, mine-by-mine output, refining arrangements and market rank follow below.
What Is Northam Platinum?#
Northam Platinum is a Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed producer of platinum-group metals that reported 938,754 troy ounces of 4E production, own operations, for the year ended 30 June 2026, up 4.4% on FY2025 and a company record, according to Northam's production update of 14 July 2026. Northam mines and smelts its ore on the Bushveld Complex but outsources the final precious-metals refining step, and it has stated an aspirational target of 1 million ounces of 4E production a year.

Northam's FY2026 sales revenue reached R53,998 million, up 64.1% from R32,901 million in FY2025 (ad-hoc-news.de, 23 September 2026). Northam is also a World Platinum Investment Council member as at 18 May 2026, unlike Sibanye-Stillwater, which is not a WPIC member. Northam's mine-to-metal chain sits inside the broader platinum group metals market, which tracks PGM supply, demand and deficit across all six platinum group metals.
Ownership and Corporate Structure#
Northam Platinum is publicly listed with no single shareholder holding a controlling stake confirmed in the facts ledger. Northam trades as an independent group, unlike Zimplats (87% owned by Impala Platinum) or Royal Bafokeng Platinum, now absorbed into Impala Bafokeng.

Northam Platinum's PGM Output by Mine and Metal#
Northam reported a record 938,754 4E ounces from its own operations for FY2026 (year ended 30 June 2026), up 4.4% on FY2025, plus a record 158,138 ounces processed for third parties, up 24.4% (Northam, 14 July 2026). The 4E basis combines platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold; it excludes iridium and ruthenium, which Impala Platinum and Valterra Platinum capture under their 6E and 5E+Au baskets.
| Mine or category | H1 F2026 output (4E oz) | Change vs H1 F2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Zondereinde | 170,262 | +3.1% |
| Booysendal | 261,148 | +1.7% |
| Eland | 44,842 | +19.6% |
| Third-party processing | 83,448 | +39.7% |
| Own-operations total (Northam-stated) | 467,818 | +3.7% |
The three mines' H1 F2026 outputs sum to 476,252 ounces, more than Northam's stated own-operations total of 467,818 ounces; the gap reflects converting concentrate to an equivalent-refined basis, so the stated group total, not the per-mine sum, is the figure to quote. Combined FY2026 4E metal sold reached a record 1.09 million ounces, up 8% on FY2025 (Northam, 14 July 2026).
Average realized prices for H1 F2026 (Northam trading statement, 9 February 2026) show where the group's revenue came from across the basket.
| Metal | Average realized price, H1 F2026 (US$/oz) |
|---|---|
| Platinum | 1,546 |
| Palladium | 1,330 |
| Rhodium | 7,284 |
| Gold | 3,843 |
| Blended 4E basket | 2,081 |
Mines and Operations#
Northam Platinum operates three named mines, Zondereinde, Booysendal and Eland, all on South Africa's Bushveld Complex and all 100% owned.
| Mine | Location | Reef | Ownership | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zondereinde | Northern western limb, near Thabazimbi, Limpopo | Merensky and UG2 | 100% | Operating |
| Booysendal | Eastern limb, near Mashishing, Mpumalanga/Limpopo border | Merensky and UG2 | 100% | Operating |
| Eland | South-eastern western limb, North West province | UG2 | 100% | Operating |
Zondereinde is Northam's oldest and deepest mine, working between 1,100 m and 2,000 m with decline access to 2,400 m (Northam MRR, 30 June 2025). Its new Zondereinde 3 shaft, commissioned in July 2026 after a R6.3 billion, five-and-a-half-year investment, is Northam's self-described world's deepest raise-bored shaft; with the Zondereinde 4 shaft also under development, Northam says the mine can produce for another 40 years above 400,000 ounces a year.
PGM Refining and Accreditation#
Northam's concentrate is toll-refined by two named counterparties, both LPPM Good Delivery-accredited for platinum, so Northam's metal carries that accreditation even though Northam owns no refinery of its own.
- Heraeus: refines Northam's concentrate at Hanau, Germany, and Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), South Africa; Heraeus PGM SA (Gqeberha) holds LPPM Good Delivery status for platinum and palladium.
- Johnson Matthey: added more recently to diversify Northam's refining capacity; Johnson Matthey plc holds LPPM Good Delivery status for platinum.
Co-Product Economics#
Chrome is Northam's main co-product: FY2026 chrome concentrate production and sales reached a record 1.69 million tonnes, up 17.4% on FY2025, driven by higher UG2 throughput and concentrator yields (Northam, 14 July 2026). Eland's chrome output rose 49.5% to 308,831 tonnes, the fastest-growing of Northam's three chrome streams; a revenue share for chrome against the 4E basket is not established in the sources reviewed.
Recent Corporate Events#
Northam disclosed on 25 August 2026 that it had received an unsolicited, exploratory and non-binding approach from a major, unnamed South African PGM producer, proposing either an asset-level or a full corporate transaction; Northam's board resolved to run a competitive strategic process rather than negotiate exclusively with a single party, Daily Maverick reported.
Northam then invited pre-selected third parties into that process, confirming on 16 September 2026 that it had received no formal "offer" as defined under South Africa's Companies Act at the invitation stage (Shanghai Metals Market). Its shares fell 6.15% to close at R266.07 on the JSE on 23 September 2026, the week it published FY2026 results.
Where Northam Platinum Fits in the PGM Market#
On a company-reported-ounce basis, Northam ranks fifth among the world's PGM producers, behind Implats, Valterra Platinum, Nornickel and Sibanye-Stillwater and ahead of Zimplats, with 938,754 own-operations ounces and 158,138 third-party ounces in FY2026. That ranking cannot be summed with the producers above it: each uses a different metal basket, Implats and Zimplats on 6E, Valterra on 5E+Au, Sibanye-Stillwater on separate 4E, 2E and 3E figures, and Northam on 4E, so a global total needs a single-source series such as WPIC or Johnson Matthey, never a sum of company reports.
Other PGM Producers#
DailyPlatinum covers Northam's mine-to-metal peers on the same and adjacent reporting bases, listed below with their own rank and basket.
- Valterra Platinum: rank 2, 5E+Au basis, 3,200.6 koz metal-in-concentrate output, CY2025.
- Sibanye-Stillwater: rank 4, South African 4E basis, 1,724,778 oz, plus separate US 2E and recycling figures, CY2025.
