What Is Impala Platinum?#

Impala Platinum is Impala Platinum Holdings Limited, listed on the JSE (ticker IMP), and reported 3.56 million ounces (3.56 Moz) of gross refined 6E PGM production for FY2026, the year ended 30 June 2026, according to Mining Weekly's report of the company's 31 July 2026 production update. The 6E basket used throughout this page means platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and gold, Implats' own definition of the term. That FY2026 refined figure came in above the midpoint of the 3.4 to 3.6 Moz guidance the company had issued a year earlier, and followed a gross group (mined) total of 3,553.3 koz 6E in FY2025, itself down 2.7% on FY2024, per Implats' 4 August 2025 production update. Impala Platinum's own concentrate is folded into the wider platinum group metals market alongside output from every other named producer DailyPlatinum covers.

Impala Platinum's PGM Output by Mine and Metal#

Impala Platinum's largest single contributor is Impala Rustenburg, which produced 1.74 million ounces of 6E metal in FY2026, up 4% year on year, according to the company's 31 July 2026 production update reported by Mining Weekly. The other managed operations each report on the same 6E basis but not always for the same period, since not every asset's FY2026 figure had been broken out individually at the time of that update; the table below states each figure's own period rather than mixing them.

Operation 6E output Period Change year on year
Impala Rustenburg 1.74 Moz FY2026 +4%
Zimplats (concentrate) 660,400 oz FY2026 +5%
Zimplats (matte) 606,300 oz FY2026 n/a
Impala Canada (concentrate) 212,800 oz FY2026 -10%
Impala Bafokeng (concentrate) 481,300 oz FY2025 -0.3%
Marula (concentrate) 201,900 oz FY2025 -9.6%
Gross group 6E production (all operations) 3,553,300 oz FY2025 -2.7%

Two joint ventures add a smaller, proportionate share on top of the named operations above: Two Rivers contributed 288,500 oz and Mimosa 253,900 oz of 6E metal on a proportionate basis in FY2025, each roughly flat year on year. Impala Platinum's own guidance for FY2027, issued 3 September 2026, targets refined and saleable production of 3.30 to 3.50 million ounces 6E, according to Polity.org.za's report of the company's results announcement.

Mines and Operations#

Impala Platinum operates eight named operations, seven mines and one dedicated refining business, concentrated on the Bushveld Complex in South Africa, with two further sites in Zimbabwe's Great Dyke and one in Ontario, Canada. Each mine's location, mining method and expected remaining life, as stated on Implats' own "at a glance" disclosure, are listed below.

Operation Location / orebody Mining method Life of mine
Impala Rustenburg Western Limb, Bushveld Complex Conventional and hybrid 27 years
Impala Bafokeng Western Limb, Bushveld Complex Conventional, hybrid and mechanized bord-and-pillar 26 years
Marula Eastern Limb, Limpopo Hybrid and conventional 7 years
Two Rivers Eastern Limb, Mpumalanga Fully mechanized bord-and-pillar 21 years
Zimplats Great Dyke, southwest of Harare, Zimbabwe Mechanized bord-and-pillar plus limited opencast 42 years
Mimosa Wedza Complex, Zimbabwe Bord-and-pillar 8 years
Impala Canada (Lac des Iles) Ontario, north of Thunder Bay Longhole open stope and sub-level shrinkage Extended to mid-2027
Impala Refining Services Springs, South Africa Toll and purchase refining (not a mine) n/a

Impala Canada's Lac des Iles mine had been due to close in 2026; the operation received a one-year reprieve in November 2025 and now runs to mid-2027, with a further extension possible if the tailings-facility investment case holds up against the palladium price outlook.

PGM Refining and Accreditation#

Impala Platinum's concentrate is refined by its own LPPM Good Delivery-listed operation, the brand name Impala Platinum Limited, one of only four South African entities on the LPPM's platinum list. Impala Refining Services, the group's toll-and-purchase refining business at Springs, also processes concentrate bought in from other, smaller producers rather than only Impala's own mines: it refined 1,504.1 koz of 6E metal in FY2025 against 1,244.0 koz refined from Impala's own mined material in the same year.

Recent Corporate Events#

Impala Platinum posted headline earnings of ZAR 22.9 billion for FY2026, against ZAR 732 million a year earlier, in results the company announced on 3 September 2026. The same announcement set FY2027 guidance of 3.30 to 3.50 million ounces of refined and saleable 6E production, unit costs of ZAR 25,250 to 26,250 per 6E ounce, and capital expenditure of ZAR 9 to 11 billion, alongside a new multi-year capital program of roughly ZAR 60 billion, according to Polity.org.za's report of that announcement.

Where Impala Platinum Fits in the PGM Market#

On a 6E-ounce basis, Impala Platinum ranks first among the major PGM producers DailyPlatinum tracks, ahead of Valterra Platinum's 3,412.0 koz of refined 5E+Au production for calendar 2025. The comparison holds only within its own basket, since Sibanye-Stillwater (1,724,778 oz on a South African 4E basis) and Northam Platinum (938,754 oz, also 4E) report on a different metal basket and cannot be summed or ranked directly against a 6E figure. DailyPlatinum makes no recommendation on Impala Platinum shares; the wider platinum group metals market tracks supply, demand and the deficit or surplus each of these producers feeds into.

Other PGM Producers#

DailyPlatinum also covers other major PGM producers for comparison, each reporting on its own metal basket, listed below.

  • Valterra Platinum, a Class A South African integrated producer reporting on a 5E+Au basis, 3,412.0 koz refined in calendar 2025.
  • Sibanye-Stillwater, a Class A integrated producer with South African and US mines, reporting South African output on a 4E basis (1,724,778 oz in 2025).
  • Northam Platinum, a Class A South African producer reporting on a 4E basis (938,754 oz from its own operations in FY2026).
