Key takeaways

  • Impala Platinum Holdings reported five fatalities in the quarter ended 30 September 2026, alongside a 2% improvement in its total-injury frequency rate and a 14% improvement in its lost-time injury frequency rate.
  • No new, independently verifiable PGM benchmark price could be confirmed on a primary source today.

Impala Platinum reported five workplace fatalities and a 3% drop in group PGM output for its first quarter of FY2027, underscoring the safety pressure weighing on South Africa's platinum sector this week. Separately, South Korean researchers published a ruthenium-based hydrogen catalyst that matches platinum's performance using a fraction of the precious metal, a reminder that catalyst R&D keeps chipping away at platinum group metal loadings even as miners wrestle with safety and cost. It was a thin day for verified PGM price news, so today's report focuses on these two developments plus dated context from the past week.

Implats posts five fatalities and a 3% fall in Q1 FY2027 production#

Impala Platinum Holdings reported five fatalities in the quarter ended 30 September 2026, alongside a 2% improvement in its total-injury frequency rate and a 14% improvement in its lost-time injury frequency rate. Group 6E production volumes fell 3% from the prior comparable quarter to 854,000 ounces: managed output declined 4% to 665,000 ounces and joint-venture output declined 4% to 133,000 ounces, while third-party receipts rose 8% to 56,000 ounces. Gross 6E refined and saleable production fell 8% to 763,000 ounces, and 6E sales volumes were 6% lower at 796,000 ounces.

CEO Nico Muller said the group faced "disappointing setbacks" in its journey to zero harm, adding that despite reduced injury rates across operations, it was "deeply saddened to report the loss of five of our colleagues during the period." Of the five deaths, four occurred at the Impala Rustenburg complex and one at Marula. The company said the causes spanned rail-bound equipment, exposure to sulphur dioxide, winch and rigging incidents, and a fall of ground. After two rail-bound equipment accidents in July 2026, the company had already halted mining at Rustenburg for four days to carry out a safety reset.

Implats left its FY2027 guidance for volumes, costs and capital spending unchanged. The company added that renewed annual supply contracts with its customer base point to higher demand in 2027, and that despite increased price volatility, the PGM basket price remains strong enough to support its spending plans. The report matters for the market because it is the first hard data point on South African mined PGM supply for the new fiscal year, coming on top of a run of safety-related stoppages across the sector this year. KAIST unveils ruthenium catalyst that matches platinum using a quarter of the metal#

A KAIST team led by Professor Jinwoo Lee developed a water-electrolysis catalyst based on an "atom-layer neighbor" structure, which groups three to four ruthenium atoms into thin, single-layer clusters so neighboring atoms can act together during the hydrogen-producing reaction. In a membrane electrolyzer cell, the catalyst reached a current density of 9.82 amperes per square centimeter at 2.0 volts and 80°C, matching a commercial platinum catalyst's output while cutting precious-metal use by about three-quarters, with catalytic activity per unit mass roughly four times that of the platinum benchmark. Over a 500-hour continuous test, it lost only about half as much performance as the platinum catalyst did over the same run. The findings were published online in Nature Communications on 22 September 2026.

The study is an incremental but notable data point for platinum's long-term hydrogen-economy demand case: ruthenium substitution research continues to target the precious-metal cost of green hydrogen electrolyzers, a theme DailyPlatinum tracks on its PGM catalysts chemistry and ruthenium pages.

Prices and market context#

No new, independently verifiable PGM benchmark price could be confirmed on a primary source today. For context, WPIC's Platinum Quarterly for Q2 2026, published 9 September 2026, revised its 2026 platinum outlook to a 265 koz surplus from a previously forecast 297 koz deficit, while lifting its estimate of the 2025 deficit to over 1 million ounces, with above-ground stocks estimated at roughly 3.4 months of demand by the end of 2026. Implats' own Q1 FY2027 commentary noted that PGM basket pricing remains volatile but has stayed robust enough to support its spending plans. What to watch#

  • Implats' annual general meeting is scheduled for 29 October 2026, the same day as today's production report.
  • Implats said 135,000 6E ounces of smelter throughput was deferred in the quarter after a fatality disrupted smelting rates at its Mineral Processing operations in August, with the impact on refined production expected to unwind between September and November 2026.
  • Zimplats' 60-day furnace-ring maintenance, which started in September 2026, means the accumulated concentrate stockpile built up during the quarter is expected to be processed later in FY2027.
