It was a quiet week for fresh PGM news, with one clear standout: Sylvania Platinum's record quarterly production, reported Friday. Two other dated items from earlier in the week add context: UBS deepened its stake in Sibanye-Stillwater, and Valterra Platinum's refined output fell sharply on deferred maintenance. Chinese platinum futures also dropped on a hot US inflation print.
The week's top stories#
Sylvania Platinum posts record quarterly PGM output#
Sylvania Platinum's South African operations delivered a record quarter. In results reported on 30 October 2026, Sylvania Platinum reported record combined production of 25,971 ounces on a four-element PGM basis for the September quarter, up 9% from 23,868 ounces in the preceding quarter, across its SDO retreatment plants and the Thaba joint venture. Net revenue increased 30% to US$62.9 million, supported by higher declared output and a stronger PGM basket price. The gain came with cost pressure: group cash cost increased 8% to US$1,121 per four-element ounce, and management retained its full-year target of 85,000–95,000 four-element PGM ounces, meaning the quarter's result remains ahead of, not a change to, annual guidance. At Thaba, better plant stability and third-party ore helped offset continuing mining and feed-quality problems. Sylvania reprocesses chrome tailings and dumps for PGMs rather than mining new ore, making its results a useful read on South African PGM recovery economics. Also this week#
UBS Group AG told Sibanye-Stillwater on 29 October 2026 that its beneficial interest in the company's ordinary shares had risen to 5.03%, a routine disclosure under South African takeover rules with no indication of an offer for the company. Separately, Valterra Platinum's production report for the quarter to 30 September 2026, published 23 October 2026, showed refined PGM output excluding tolling down 41% to 576,900 ounces because scheduled processing maintenance was shifted from the first quarter into the third; the company said nine-month output remained broadly in line with the prior year and left full-year guidance of 3.0 to 3.4 million ounces unchanged. Background on both companies: Sibanye-Stillwater production and Valterra Platinum production.
Prices over the week#
Spot and futures PGM trading was closed for the weekend as of Friday evening New York time, so no weekend price move is reported here. The clearest dated price signal of the week came from China's domestic futures market: Shanghai Metals Market reported on 30 October 2026 (Beijing time) that platinum futures came under significant pressure, falling sharply, with GFEX PT2612 down 4.88% to 353.6 yuan/g, following the release of PCE data showing inflation well above the US Fed's 2% target, referring to the US PCE inflation report released 29 October. Readers can track live and historical platinum pricing on DailyPlatinum's platinum price page.
What to watch next week#
Watch whether Valterra's deferred maintenance keeps affecting refined output into the fourth quarter, since the company's unchanged 3.0-3.4 million ounce full-year guidance implies a stronger finish is needed after the third quarter's 41% drop. Also watch for any further regulatory filings on Sibanye-Stillwater's shareholder register following UBS's stake increase to 5.03%, disclosed 29 October 2026.
