How Is the Rhodium Price per Gram Calculated?#
The rhodium price per gram is the per-troy-ounce quote divided by 31.1034768, because one troy ounce contains exactly 31.1034768 grams. The factor is fixed by definition (LBMA), and rounding it to 31.1 misstates the result: over one million ounces the shortcut loses 3.48 kg.
A gram price in another currency adds one step: the US dollar gram price is multiplied by the exchange rate at a stated time. Two sites can therefore show different gram prices from the same ounce quote if their exchange rates carry different timestamps.
Why No Source Quotes Rhodium in US Dollars per Gram#
No price source quotes rhodium in US dollars per gram: Johnson Matthey quotes US dollars per troy ounce of rhodium sponge, Umicore quotes euros per gram, and no exchange lists rhodium at all. The six sources and what each needs before it becomes a US dollar gram price are compared below.

Johnson Matthey's base price is the most-cited "rhodium price", which makes the world's reference rhodium price a sponge price. It is one firm's offer to wholesale customers, set by its trading desks and available only to accounts with a genuine manufacturing need. Johnson Matthey publishes four regional settings a day, so "the rhodium price" on a given date is ambiguous until the region is named. Umicore's €254.95 per gram on 5 August 2026 is the only native gram quote among the refiners. This page does not turn it into dollars, because Umicore publishes six price types and the matching exchange-rate timestamp is not stated.
China's Guangzhou Futures Exchange (GFEX) has traded platinum and palladium futures since 27 November 2025, priced in yuan per gram with 1,000-gram lots, according to the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC). Worked Example: Johnson Matthey's February 2026 Level in Grams#
At $12,000 per troy ounce, the late-February 2026 three-year high in Johnson Matthey's PGM Market Report, one gram of rhodium cost $385.81 ($12,000 ÷ 31.1034768). The calculation, with the live tokens the widget fills, is shown below.

How Far the Rhodium Gram Price Swings#
Rhodium's gram price fell about 91% in seven months, from $324.72 in June 2008 to about $30.54 by January 2009, on the levels Reuters reported. Four moves between the dated levels in the table are listed below, all derived by DailyPlatinum from the sourced endpoints.
- 2008 to 2009: minus 90.6% in about seven months, $324.72 to $30.54 per gram.
- 2016 to 2021: about plus 4,867% in five years, about $19.29 to around $958 per gram (hedged peak).
- 2021 to mid-2023: about minus 83% in 27 months, to below $160.75 per gram.
- Late 2024 to February 2026: plus 153% to plus 173% in about 15 months, from $141.46 to $152.72 up to $385.81 per gram.

What Does One Gram of Rhodium Represent?#
One gram of rhodium is 0.0805 cubic centimeters of metal, about the rhodium in 2.9 US gasoline cars on the US DOE's 2025 projection, and one 21.8-millionth of 2025 world mine supply. The volume follows from rhodium's density of 12.423 g/cm3, and the vehicle and supply figures are compared below.

Vehicles dominate the gram's use: automotive catalysts took 84.6% of rhodium demand in 2025 (899,000 of 1,063,000 oz), just below the 85% to 95% band Johnson Matthey quotes. The US DOE's per-car loading rose from 0.28 g in 2011 to 0.38 g in 2020 before the 2025 projection of 0.35 g. Secondary supply is recycled converter metal only. Johnson Matthey's footnote defines it as open-loop recycling from the automotive sector, which added 312,000 oz of rhodium in 2025.

Is Rhodium More Expensive Than Gold per Gram?#
Rhodium costs 217.6% of the gold price per gram today ($289.36 against $132.96), the same ratio as per ounce because both metals are quoted per troy ounce. A reading above 100% means a gram of rhodium costs more than a gram of gold.
The ratio has no fixed level. In March 2021 rhodium traded at around 15 times the price of gold, the sourced description of the dealer-quoted peak, and rhodium's own gram price has since moved from below $160.75 in mid-2023 to $385.81 in February 2026. Buying, Selling and Tracking Rhodium by the Gram#
Rhodium buyers pay a dealer's offer and sellers receive its bid, so the per-gram price a trade settles at differs from the quote on this page. Bid-offer spreads widen in the order gold, silver, platinum, palladium, rhodium, so rhodium carries the widest gap of the five.
Buying Rhodium in Small Sizes: Bars, Sponge and Minimums#
The smallest rhodium bars DailyPlatinum has verified are 1/10 troy ounce (about 3.11 grams) sintered bars from MetaMetals, pressed from powder because rhodium melts at 1,964 °C. MetaMetals sinters its bars from powder of at least 99.95% purity without melting it, and the case for holding such bars is weighed under rhodium investment. Four retail terms, checked on 6 August 2026, are listed below.
- Sintered bars: 1 oz and 1/10 oz (about 3.11 g), MetaMetals, with a lead time of 6 to 8 weeks.
- Online minimum: USD 5,000 per physical order at Kitco, whose smallest rhodium units are a 1 oz bar and 1 oz of sponge.
- Sponge: sold by telephone only at Kitco, as are rhodium orders above 20 oz.
- Per-gram retail: Strategic Metals Invest prices rhodium per gram at retail and quotes bulk orders separately.

Selling Rhodium Scrap by Its Rhodium Content#
Rhodium scrap is paid on its recovered rhodium content at the buyer's bid, and SFA (Oxford) states that refiners recover around 95% of the PGM content of spent autocatalysts, including rhodium.
